Some good looking pies.  I'm a little surprised that Zuppardi's only ranked #50.   Of my own favorites, I put Zuppardi's in a 3-way tie for first, along with Pepe's and Sally's.   I rank those 3 a bit above Modern.  I have yet to try New Haven's other famous pizza joint called "Bar".

Great 'listacle' (a new term I learned recently).

And the slide show moves very quickly.

Just goes to show that one can now get great pizza most anywhere in the USA.

And, it shows how free information flow and a free market benefits all.

Not at all. It shows that if you want great apizza you have to go to New Haven, Connecticut to find it.

I've only been to seven places on the list, but Zuppardi's is one of them, and I agree it's hard to imagine 49 pizzas in the country that are better than their fresh clam pie.

I've also been to Pepe's in New Haven and have no problem with them being on top. I'd say it's the best pizza I've ever had. Zuppardi's may be next on that list. But I have a definite preference for New Haven style pizza over the Neapolitan style pizza that dominates this list.

I've only been to 12 out of 101

Ironically #78 (Gino's in Long Beach NY) and # 2 (DiFara's in Brooklyn) were my "go to" local pizza joints when I lived in Lido Beach and Brooklyn. That was back in the day wne there was no internet, no social media and no lines to get in the doorand honestly I thought DiFara's was actually better back then....

    wj,
You've actually been to 13--one of them by default.  #39 is Pequod's here in Chicago.  That store was started by Burt Katz, founder and owner of Burt's Place where you have eaten (twice, I believe).  Burt started Pequod's in 1971 and sold it to the current owner in '86.  He started his present establishment in '89.

It's interesting that the list credits Burt as the founder of Pequod's, and even mentions the new store, calling it a "stalwart" of the Chicago Style Pizza genre.  Yet they fail to rank the joint as part of the list.

Seems a little neglectful to me, but I don't hold grudges.

This seems like the best place to alert my Roadfood pals to an upcoming Food Network show featuring Burt and his Place. "America's Meals of a Lifetime" airs this Friday, December 26th at 9:00pm.

The show presents 10 restaurants Food Network considers "bucket list worthy". They've somehow put Burt's in the same category as Antoine's of New Orleans and the French Laundry. Pretty crazy, I know. But I can assure you, no one would find it more ridiculous than Burt himself--that is, if he knew what The French Laundry was.

I've been to Rao's in New York a few times, and Antoine's several times. But that's it. I suppose there's always the possibility that someone in the Chicago area might make it possible for a visit to Burt's. Of course, I'm not sure whether lleechef would eat anything there as she swears she'll eat stuff like that only if it comes from Frank Pepe's and has clams on it.

I think you're confusing Lisa with someone else that lives in the Hoffman household.

And yes, someone in Chicago is working on making a Roadfood group visit a possibility.  Say somewhere between April 30th and May 3rd...

In truth, she swore after eating a whole white clam apizza at Pepe's last June that she'd never, ever eat anything called pizza again -- holding out for white clam apizza at Pepe's in New Haven. But maybe, for you, she'll make an exception.

Buddy I knew that Pequod's was founded by Burt, but as you know, Chi Town Diner never takes me anywhere good

Now that was a odd list of restaurants. I enjoyed finally getting a peak inside of Burt's kitchen.

I finally caught the Food Network's 10 best restaurants show.  I am not especially crazy about deep dish pizza so I disagreed with Burt's Place.  I'm a New Haven pizza kinda girl.  Only one on the show I've been to is French Laundry.
