There's only 1 photo that really matters:

I don't know Brad, I found two action shots.

A unusual trend of food porn is people taking pictures of people taking pictures of food.

Buddy, to thoroughly enjoy Schreiner's food requires the following:
1. Minimum age of 80
2. Drive a beige Buick
3. Your apricot miniature poodle stays in the Buick while you eat
4. Dentures or gums are used for eating
5. Lack of taste buds or sense of smell
6. Love of soft or liquified food
Schreiner's does make a great rhubarb pie. However, it's seasonal.

I didn't dislike Schreiner's, it just didn't thrill me the way some of the other stops did.  Even then, as I said, the delicious Clam Chowder and the unique house made Root Beer made it a worthwhile stop.

As JRP mentioned, we did manage to order a slice of almost every pie in the house, and they were quite good.  My Lemon Meringue was a mile-high affair with a beautiful pile of light, foamy meringue on top.  Not quite as tart as I usually like it, but nothing got left behind.  I even enjoyed a bite of Mince Meat Pie, something I've never done before.

I tried a bite of Gyp's pizza burger at Shreiners, and it was quite good. It wasnt hamburger, it was a pork patty which I believe they make there. I think one has to know what to order there as I believe there are some diamonds amid the rocks.

Scientific research has shown that as we get OLD, our taste buds become less sensitive.
It all starts to go downhill around 40. That’s when our taste buds begin to stop growing back. Individually, each taste bud goes through a constant cycle of birth, death, and rebirth that lasts about two weeks. A healthy tongue sloughs off and regrows these taste buds constantly. Once we hit middle age, the buds continue to die and be shed, but a smaller number regenerate as the years go on.

And with fewer taste buds in our mouths, flavors begin to taste … blander.

“The old myth that people in nursing homes need their foods under-seasoned is wrong—they need it more to taste the same as they used to,” says Mark Ainsworth, a professor of culinary arts at the Culinary Institute of America. “My mother puts a lot of salt on her food, because she needs it to make it taste seasoned at all.”
The blue-hairs who are regular patrons of Schreiner's do not seem to have problems with the seasoning of the food there. So perhaps it's not about the lack of proper seasoning at Schreiner's, but more about the deteriorating senses of the codgers that comprise the Contingent.

As Buddy likes to say, just saying.

Most of all, I love Wisconsin!  The food traditions like Friday Night Fish Fry's and booze in gas stations immediately come to mind.

Joe, did you take or ship any goodies back home?  If not, start putting together a list for next May!

Here's an interesting story about Joel Bernhard, the owner of Confections For Any Occasion.

Hey Brad, I made limited purchases(hotel room snacks).  The BBQ jerky from Eden Meats was excellent, very BBQ-y, and I really enjoyed the cheese from Widmer's(4 year old cheddar).  It was crumbly, but not crystally...medium sharp.  Next time I will be better prepared for take home stuff.

And, I spoke to Joel twice without realizing he was blind!

A couple of weeks ago I passed through Fond du Lac on a Monday morning and stopped in at Connie's Diner, formerly Joan's Kitchen.  It's downtown and right across from the park, which has a Civil War memorial that features the 4 major battles around the base.

Connie's isn't much more than a hole in the wall and if I didn't know the address I probably would've driven right by it.

During the time I was there I was the only person not recognized by name, so it's definitely a neighborhood/locals kind of place.

Nothing special, just 2 eggs over easy with some very good hash browns and dark rye toast.

Instead of bacon or sausage on the side I chose a patty melt, which came on the same dark rye and with what might've been white American or processed Swiss cheese.

I enjoyed my visit.  While the food may not've been spectacular it was solidly good, the service was excellent, and the restaurant had a nice, comfortable feel.

Fond du Lac has now been immortalized by John McGivern.  Some of those places look familiar!

Wendt's on the Lake is featured in the current (for the next week or so) episode of Wisconsin Foodie.

You focused on the Wisconsin Foodie guy and you missed Linda Wendt herself.  Dig that mile high hair and the red shellacked finger nails that look like they could filet those perch with out a knife.

BTW, Wisconsin Foodie recently aired a segment on Schreiner's that made me think we did them a disservice.  Our lack of enthusiasm may have stemmed from being overwhelmed by everything we ate before finally arriving at Schreiner's.  I suggest a return trip to Fondy that focuses exclusively on Schreiner's.

We start out with breakfast then go off and do some totally non-food related activity, come back for lunch, go off for another food free field trip, then return for dinner and dessert.  No joke.  Wisconsin Foodie made Schreinier's look way better than what we experienced, and maybe it was our fault for cramming in too much before we got there.

Buddy,

Don't be such a FIB. Linda (& her lovely daughter) looked like typical Wisconsin gals. Used calendars are cheaper, don'cha know.

I like the Schreiner's idea, but we should have buffetbuster make a test run first. Attitude means a lot there. In an alternate 1970's Jane & Michael universe, this is the place everyone in the area would have recommended. That's how we first found it. I thought it comparable to those mediocre California coffee shops that are universally acclaimed here.

The ambitious approach would be to drive up Friday for fish at one of the area supper clubs and then do the Schreiner's thing on Saturday.  Schedule it during the warmer months and there could be random stops at Gilles Custard for those who need a sugar fix, and that afternoon food-free field trip could be spelled n-a-p for anyone staying over Saturday night as well.

Any time's good with me, although with baseball season starting a lot of my weekends are already occupied.  I don't think Schreiner's is going anywhere anytime soon, so maybe this becomes a longer-range project in deference to the Contingent possibilities that're already on the table (spring supper club/fish fry, delayed Smoke Day, Fred's, etc.).

However, I'd do a Schreiner's breakfast-lunch combo on any given weekend since lunch and dinner menus usually have more overlap than breakfast and lunch.

Plus, I'll be soon announcing potential Flatlander tours for both summer and fall this year.  Add in any other Cheesehead tours and it's gonna be a busy year for The Contingent!
