FYI - Since the Roadhouse's will be traveling to Wisconsin on the previous night, we will be joining them for a Friday Fishfry somewhere. Standby for details.

Oh, Ann, you wouldn't want to meet him. He dresses funny. Not that he wears dresses(although I don't really know whether he wears dresses, I just assume he doesn't, but I could be wrong). But, I mean, well, you know.

Yeah, I think so. I'll bet you'll have a blast with all those Wisconsin people. Of course, there is the fact that Mr. Roadhouse will be there. Still, his wife is very nice.

Mr. Roadhouse is, unfortunately, not confirmed yet.  Hoping to have my November work schedule later this week.  That'll either lock us in or keep us home.

And yes, there is a reason my wife is called my "better half".  I know Mr. Hoffman can relate.

There's a chance we'll be available for Friday fish as well, if it's somewhere around Fondy.  Mrs. C thinks she might be off the schedule that night as well so we're thinking about maybe heading up after work.

There's Blanck's Lake Aire on the west side of the lake and Blanck's Supper Club on the east if you're looking for possibilities, but I can't vouch for either.  Jim & Linda's is just northwest of BSC, too.

I wonder how much time and money it would take to circumnavigate the lake via restaurant...

Which reminds me about Fond du Lac -- Taycheedah is the women's prison there, and remember "Run Bambi, Run?  You can drive around the back and see the fence she shimmied over and was picked up at.  Of course, why would you want to?  We did, because we lived there.
Just north of Taycheedah is Eden, but I don't know if anyone would be interested in these.

Re: 11/15/14 Fond du Lac E&G - Contingent on adequate interest 2014/10/24 15:46:49 (permalink)
Actually, SC, Eden is south of Taycheedah, by several miles.  Taycheedah being roughly due east of Fond du Lac (a suburb, like), and Eden is a small community a few miles southeast on Hwy 45.

We never had the opportunity to try Blanck's at all.  They are a very old time name and place there, but underwent some major changes, and was closed for much of when we were there, then sort-of open, in an on-and-off again kind of way.

We ate at Jim and Linda's once or twice  while we were there, and they have a great view.  Don't remember anything bad about the food, or memorable either.  They do serve each table a large bowl of soup, which everyone then dips into their own bowls.  I idly wondered what happened to the uneaten soup, of which there was "a-plenty."

The Eden Cafe is a nice, old style, typical Midwestern place, and it is a cafe, and much enjoyed and supported by the locals.  I don't remember if we had fish fry, but we had a lot of breakfasts and lunches. Never unhappy.  The cafe is connected (not physically, it's downtown) to the local meat market.  But the market is no great shakes, in my poor opinion.

But for an evening fish fry, here is another possibility, the Northwinds Supper Club, located at the north edge of Eden on Hwy 45, so it's an easy shot over and back from Fond du Lac.

The place is new (or newer, about ten or twelve or so years now?), but has an old time supper club feel.  The very nice dim and well-appointed bar goes right along with that, and, again, I don't remember being disappointed.

In Fond du Lac, there is a steak house, Sebastian's, and a seafood place, Salty's, both owned by the same successful restaurateur, who also owns Friar Tuck's and others.  But I doubt if either one is up to the serious challenges that a group of real Roadfooders might present.  Sorry, but I liked 'em both. There was the Sebastian's Special, 12 oz sirloin and the usual for 14.95.  Worked for me, real good.  But I see it's now up to 17.95!

Or, there's this place (Oar House, get it?), which was getting good while we were leaving, so don't know today, but in their beginning they had good stuff and good portions.  Bar food, maybe, a step above.

Oops, I muddied the water a bit!  It's The Eden Grill that's north of Taycheedah while Eden Meats and The Eden Cafe are south, in the village proper.

I'll be darned.  So that's what happened to that place.  It's in a relatively new and small small mall.  When we were there, it was a restaurant owned by a married couple that already had a successful restaurant elsewhere.  They had real good food, then.  But for some reason it didn't go. I thought maybe because the location is off Hwy 151, instead of where people could see it, so their only business was local, and just not enough.

Anyway, it was closed when we were there, and now I see it lives again with the Eden Cafe people.  That's great.  Their "Holyland" burger looks real good to me.

(The Holyland is a heavily Catholic area to the east of Fond du Lac, you can see all the town names, St Anna, Mt Calvary, Marytown.)

Since I am new to this area, what are the regionally appropriate foods we will be tasting?

I've got one last minor obstacle that may already be cleared--just waiting on confirmation.  Should know this week.  Once I've got that, we're in for two.

Joe,

For a good rundown of Wisconsin foods I suggest searching for one of buffetbuster's Wisconsin trip reports.

A briefer summary would include fish fries, butter burgers, bratwurst, cheese and frozen custard.

I expect that we will get together for a Friday Fish Fry and then will have a full day planned for Saturday, ending with a prime rib dinner at a Supper Club.

We're in for two.  We're spending the night in Sheboygan; our friends who live there may be interested in joining us depending on the itinerary (and if they have other social engagements), so once that's a little more finalized I'll find out that they want to do.

Maybe gyp and Michael could get me along the way....Bob has to work, but he would drop me off at the freeway, with a sign, saying" Need to eat in Fond du Lac-and meet Joe Rogo".........
