Ooh, there's an ice cream stop! Yaaaay!

Thanks for putting this together. Ralph and I remember how much work it is! We're looking forward to the friends and food in a few weeks! :-)

I wish there would have been at least one more Ice Cream stop.  Unfortunately, Murray's, KC's premier premium Ice Cream maker, went out of business in December.  They usually close down for a winter break and reopen in the spring.  But this time the owner said it's time to retire.

There is a growing popularity for Frozen Custard stands around town.  That might be an after-itinerary option for interested parties.

It is kind of funny. I was eating my Brobeck's Ham Salad sandwich at work when the topic came up. When I was doing my research at Brobeck's, I was sitting at the bar next to the carryout area and at least 6 customers ordered ham salad sandwiches to go. I bought a pound, and boy was it tasty. Highly Recommended!

As far as Bierocks go, The You Say Tomato the breakfast stop does a wonderful one and has agreed to make some available for us a breakfast on Friday. We just have to order in advance because she has limited prep space. Also, there is a Runza about 5 minutes from the pie shop on Friday Night.

More Later

As of now, I'm heading out of Sweetwater, TN Tuesday morning, planning on a stop at Mike Mills 17th St BBQ before I hit St Louis, and hope to meet up with the Chicago Crew and do some damage in the StL :)
Buddy it looks like y'all did an out standing job!! Really looking forward to it.

Group effort.  In addition to keeping each other honest, CNW played a major role in making arrangements at most of the non-BBQ outposts.

There is one hour for Joe's KC. Do we have a way around the line? We could easily be most of an hour in line.

Gonna play it all by ear.  We've got a framework which we'll do our best to follow.  If things get backed up, we rip a page out of the script and move on.  We've tried to schedule the more popular spots for off hours, specifically asking the Pitmasters for their preferred times.

Joe's KC and Arthur Bryant's are the only two where we're going in blind.  CNW was smart enough to schedule us for AB's right when they open.  The goal is to get in before the crowds.  In order to stay on time for some of the other stops, we needed to squeeze in Joe's KC wherever it would fit.  Two factors we hope will work in our favor:

1. We're going in on a Thursday as opposed to a weekend day hoping the crowd will be more manageable.
2. It's one of the last stops of the day.  If we go overtime, not such a big deal.  Even if we need to honor a reservation at Jess & Jim's, we just call and make an adjustment.

Hey wanderingjew,

Have you convinced Big Boy to put in his buffetbuster pants and come to Kansas City yet? Or maybe it's convinced buffetbuster to put on his Big Boy pants.

Every time I ask Big Boy if he wants to join us, he folds his arms , loses his smile, shuts his eyes and shakes his head with a defiant "no". He will not come unless the three required people are present. Two will not do.

Buffetbuster is on his way back from Japan. so I suspect unless there is a surprise appearance, he won't be attending.

Thanks.  Some things, no matter how much you want them, just don't make the cut.  There are only so many places you can visit during the day as time keeps rolling along.  Even as we bust our butts to keep up with the current itinerary, I'm pretty sure, deep in his heart, CNW still wants to find time to stop at In-A-Tub Tacos.

Although Runzas aren't on the list, a little birdie told me a certain Diner of all things ChiTown may be making an independent side trip.  Maybe he'll pick up an extra couple of pockets to share with the group at a later stop.

Maybe management at Joe's should do a better job of motivating their workers and making things more efficient.

Maybe if they dragged out a few of those customers sitting around taking up tables, the rest of us could get in a little quicker.

I don't think they want to serve people faster at the original location. There are few tables and they keep them in line until a table opens for them. To Go has a different line.

Looks like Monday's schedule is set

Early Morning Coffee at Broadway Café steps away from my hotel (I'll be switching hotels Sunday night)  in the Westport Neighborhood of KC

Brunch at Arthur Bryants. Even though my last visit 9 years ago was disastrous, I feel a need to return .

Then the Bierock Hunt begins starting in Holton KS about 1/2 hour north of Topeka at the Trail's Café
Although Bierocks are an occasional special, I spoke with owner, Cindy yesterday who said they will have it available on the menu.

Last stop is Grandma Wock's in Topeka for another Bierock or two, or perhaps to go on the plane with me if I'm too full to enjoy them there.

Hoping to squeeze in an attraction or two in between Trail's Café and Grandma Wock's

Then it's just over an hour drive back to the KC Airport.  Flight home is at 7:30 pm from KC. I don't get home till almost 1AM

Beethoven's # 9 in Paola (about 13 miles west of Louisburg where Cedar Cove is) has Bierocks.

I looked at the menu for Beethoven's. Looks really good, unfortunately it's going to be a little out of the way from Topeka.

Hi Chris,

I'm pretty sure this isn't going to interest you or anyone else, but I'm planning on going to SLAP's for lunch and Joe's for dinner on Wednesday. I know the crawl is going to both of them the next afternoon, right before Jess & Jim's. I loved SLAP's when I was there in October, 2015, and wanted a full lunch (including an entire potato casserole!). I also had wanted to try Joe's in 2015 and wasn't able to make it. This way I'll be able to go to both places, and try not to eat too much on Thursday before Jess & Jim's.

So, if you or anyone else would like to go to SLAP's or Joe's on Wednesday, we could meet up.

David

We'll get around to sharing contact info as we get a little closer to the tour.  Last year, in Pittsburgh, Ralph Melton set up a group text system so we could all stay in touch and share photos during the day.

I've done this with GroupMe (www.groupme.com) before. The advantage of GroupMe is that it works for most phones, including people who can text but who can't install an app.

I've set a GroupMe for this group with the folks whose contact information I have.

I don't have contact information for these people. I invite y'all to text me at 412-580-5644 to join the group.

David,

If you don't feel the need to be in the gas station to get the whole experience (it isn't like it is a cool old gas station, more a run-off-the-mill one), you will have a shorter wait and a more comfortable experience at the Joe's KC in Olathe. The food is the same.
