2019 Crawl Discussion - ***Minneapolis / St. Paul***

Hey Roadfood folks,

I think it is time to start discussing where the annual spring crawl should be next year. We will hold off on choosing the actual dates until after the summer. Below is the list of cities that have been mentioned as possible destinations for 2019:

Cleveland (the perennial Roadhouse favorite)
Milwaukee
Savannah
Charleston (the David Sanders favorite)
Philadelphia (Rogo led tour)
Detroit
St. Louis
Louisville
Augusta (Chibears15 led tour)

Decatur and Springfield are culinary deserts, so they won't be considered. Any others?

Let's discuss pros and cons of each place for two weeks and then we can vote using the Doodle poll to narrow it down to the eventual winner. Feel free to add any cities to the discussion. Take care.

Cheers,
Danny

I don't know if anyone else has a shellfish allergy, but I would prefer to avoid Savannah and Charleston because there is going to be a lot of shrimp on the menu. I like all of the other choices but my favorite is Cleveland simply because as I recall, we decided last year that the second place finisher for this years tour would be the next destination.

Looks like an interesting list. Maybe people who are familiar with the areas could give some kind of a presentation, like Jeff did before we decided on Kansas City, about the various places, and what we would have to look forward to.

As I generally go to Charleston and Savannah every year or so, I wouldn't mind going somewhere else with the group. I'm also looking at the possibilities of where to go for a few days before a Crawl (maybe Baltimore before Philadelphia; Atlanta before Augusta; even possibly for me Birmingham before Louisville, or Kansas City before St. Louis). I know that wouldn't be a deciding factor for many, or any, others.

I do like the idea of the southern spots, Savannah, Charleston, Augusta, because I love the southern way of cooking.

I think the plethora of new reviews done of CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) eateries in the last 2-3 years is testimony of the great spots available to hit if Augusta is chosen. That would include the Aiken and Western South Carolina area. Before that time the area had no Roadfood footprint but since Michael and Linda Stern moved to Aiken he has opened the floodgates. A lot of you have been to Charleston and some to Savannah. Savannah is a sleeping Roadfood giant. Trust me on that.

Thanks for starting this thread Danny. :)

Nothing against the South, and the food we had in Nashville was fantastic, but I'm not a fan of doing the same region twice in a row.

Same reason I was gung-ho about KC but not in favor of a BBQ-based city this year.

IMO Minny-St. Paul should be considered, and what would anyone's thoughts about Austin or Montreal one year be?

I know they're both outliers geographically for most people but I know for a fact Montreal is an amazing city for food and I haven't been to Austin but its reputation speaks for itself.

OK, very quick opinionated thoughts:

Cleveland - Would be more midwestern fare that we haven't had since Pittsburgh. Both myself and a friend of mine who lives there would be an asset, and more importantly, Jeff knows the city. Hotel prices should be very reasonable. Stops could be pretty spread out.

Savannah - I know almost zilch about this city, except Paula Deen apparently lives there.

Charleston - Wait, isn't that the capital of West Virginia?

Milwaukee - Only 90 minutes from Chicago, so it has to be good!

Louisville - Only 90 minutes from us, so it has to be good! I don't know as much about Louisville cuisine considering how close I live, but Huber's would be an amazing Sunday meal and Hammerheads and a Cuban place I ate at would be big hits.

St. Louis - BBQ again, yeah sure. Crime is bad here, but I'm definitely intrigued.

Austin - Brisket. One of my favorite words in the English language. Oh, and other stuff too.

Minneapolis/St. Paul - I like what I've eaten here, and I think this is an underrated city(ies). Drive for those in the east would be substantial.

Montreal - Just wanted to put it on everyone's radar. I've been twice and the food has been amazing. The very efficient Metro (subway) would be a huge help here, as would any coaching our Canadian friends who are both natives of this city could give. It's pretty far east and people would need passports.

Augusta - I played two Putt-Putt national tournaments here in the 1990s and couldn't tell you anything about this city in terms of cuisine.

Philadelphia - Interesting but mobility for a large group is a concern. Also a very long commute for our Central Time Zone friends.

Detroit - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm...while a Cuba Crawl might be beyond most folks a Miami Crawl might be doable and you could get all the Cuban food you want!

ChickenMan, I was thinking along similar lines: Before you put your key in the ignition, make sure you're old enough to drive.

So what happens next Mr. Grab-The-Bull-By-The-Horns who decides on his own that Springfield isn't even worthy of being put up for a vote?  Gonna start a Doodle Poll, or are we just going to vote via post and you'll tally it all up?  What's your plan Stan?

I can do this!!!!  And, I can't do this!!! The mind is willing, the work schedule is not able.  Maybe when I retire.  For this reason, I will go along and get along(show up and eat) and ask that Philly be removed from the list.  As always, my thanks and respect go out to the people.....the little people, who toil behind the scenes to makes these gathering a success.

I have my Canadian pollster nagle on standby ready to start Doodling on my orders.  Do we want to get the Doodle poll started already?  I was thinking we would discuss the locations here for a few more days, but it seems like most people already have their minds made up.

Jeff, since you are the ultimate authority when it comes to these crawls, should I go ahead and launch the Doodle poll?  We will have three rounds of voting.  First, we will vote to get it down to five, then two, and then the winning city.

Jim, one of the fundamental rules of these Spring crawls is "anywhere but Rhode Island."

I remember vividly the fabulous presentation Jeff did before KC and Nashville were chosen. I was hoping a few people would do presentations on various cities they are familiar with before the voting started, so we could make an informed decision.

We have two places now! first come first serve- those who come later can stay  4 miles north of New London- although I'm not sure how Sandra's then 24 year old daughter and 19 year old son will feel about that since they'll be living there.
