41 different hot dog/weiner/ bangers/franks/styles

Burgers, step aside. Corn on the cob, stay in your lane. Apple pie? Nice try. No, there is no food more American, more essential to our national identity, than the almighty hot dog. Call them wieners, bangers, franks, or dogs: this is the cuisine that makes us proud to call ourselves bloated, oily skinned, and ever-thirsty Americans. They're handheld snacks that animate childhood camping trips and Sunday afternoon ball games alike. A shared love for this national dish unites folks from sea to shining sea, and yet each US region reps its own unique take on this special meal on-the-go, reflecting the same fiercely independent spirit exhibited by our sausage-loving forefathers. By our count, there are 41 different regional hot dog varieties. Here they are, in all their natural-cased glory.

I'm generally not much for excessive toppings (mustard, or chili and cheese is about as crazy as I get) but I'd love to try a lot of the actual hot dogs themselves.

I've only had 15, but would try them all. My faves so far are are Michigan Hots/Half Smoke/CSD/Troy Mini's and of coursed raised on Red Maine Snappy Dogs.

They didn't mention every regional variation

They neglected to mention the  Japanese Dogs that were prevalent at every hot dog stand we passed by on our visit to LA last spring.

Give it a few years, just like everything else regional that begins in LA it will hit the rest of the country and become mainstream

I would love to try an Italian dog and a Sonoran dog. I'm not crazy about mustard , but, if they are supposed to have it , I would at least try it. Some of those dogs looked way too busy for me.

Saw a poster for some when I went looking for them. I'd eat them! Looks like Japadog is a cart/truck "chain", of sorts.

I really wanted to try them as well,  but we already had several meals planned later on

We also saw the bacon style dogs in Hollywood the day before but again, we already had a full food schedule.

This is enough variety for me, and just a couple of islands away.

I'd be all over those Japanese-themed dogs.
