A NEW Best Pizza in U.S. Poll by Food & Wine

Ok it's another Best Pizza poll....but I like this one....great chefs taking pizza finesse to the limits....Check all 31 slides...classic places like Frank Pepe's and his clam pizza etc....note most seem to be in NYC...although many great cities are represented. What do you think?

Of the finished pizzas that were shown, I didn't see one that I wouldn't eat. The crusts looked great and the ingredients were appealing. I love that wood fired is catching on in such a big way. Love a good charred crust.

I've been to the two in Philadelphia, Pepe's, and Delfina in San Francisco. Pepe's is certainly my favorite among those, followed by Tacconelli's in Philadelphia.

I ate at Pizzeria Vetri for the first time recently and it's very good Neapolitan pizza. But while I enjoy a good Neapolitan pie, and they dominate this list, I prefer New Haven and New York style pizza.

Domenico's, the Beloit, WI restaurant referenced in slide 9 (Nicoletta's, NYC), is still in business but the Yelp reviews vary widely.  Perhaps someday I'll check it out.

And as a bonus the slideshow leads into Best Pizza in Unexpected Places, which is also pretty interesting.

They've got one from Detroit.  I just discovered that there is such a thing as a Detroit-style pizza that is square or rectangular and has the sauce on top since I became interested in that Philadelphia pizza I just started a thread about the other day. There are some similarities, but there appears to be less sauce and a bit thicker crust on the Detroit pizza.

Pizzeria Mozza in L  A is very good. My favorites are Tacconelli's and Pizzeria Bianco. I didn't see DeLorenzo's in Robbinsville, NJ but it's another favorite.

    I agree.

One of the three best pies we've had here during our 11 years in Dallas was at their (original) Deep Ellum location.  The other two were at Olivella's original SMU location and, consistently, at Grimaldi's Allen location.

Sadly though, Cane Rosso in Fairview and Olivella's in Lakewood disappointed.

All that said (and God Help me) I still enjoy intensely the Egyptian Lounge: a "non gourmet" Antipasto and a medium pepperoni pie washed down with Dago Red and served by a sixtyish waitress wearing her high school hairstyle cannot be beaten in that dark, historic ambience.

Michael, any other Dallas "joints" give you that 'back home' vibe?
