David, I'm a maybe for this. I'll be returning from vacation the day before so my attendance is going to hinge primarily on what's waiting when I get home.

I can confirm for the Mrs. and myself.  Also, LAmuse Bouche emailed me the other day to say she had the date marked on her calendar.  Sounds like a confirmation to me.

Any idea what the head count looks to be for this shindig?

These folks have expressed an interest, but I'm not sure if they're coming.

It would be great if everyone could start confirming, although I certainly understand if it's too soon for some to make plans. If everyone comes I'll need to put a few more chairs out at my house.

David, this looks like a fabulous tour.... But Sancho and I will be on another trip at that time!

Re: A Roadfood Day Crawl in Evanston? 2018/07/05 23:16:47 (permalink)
A little more research for Evanston Day!

Today, being my birthday, I decided to go with a friend through the first four stops of Evanston Day. Even though the places are likely to be busier on a Sunday morning than Thursday morning, I thought it was worth the extraordinary effort I had to force myself to go through for the sake of the Crawl.

We're scheduled to start the Crawl at New York Bagel, but I decided to stop first at Kaufman's Deli to pick up a few slices of belly lox. The bagel store has Nova in packages (as well as cream cheese spreads), so if anyone wants regular lox, Kaufman's is the place. I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in the bagel. I was hoping they would be fresh out of the oven, but they weren't. They open at 5 am, and I was there at 8, so maybe the bagels had come out at 5. It's possible that Sunday mornings, when they are busier, the bagels will come out of the oven more often, maybe even at 8 am.

The second stop was DB3 Donuts. I really like these donuts, especially the chocolate glazed.

The donut lineup.

My chocolate glazed and raised glazed.

Our maple cinnamon.

My third stop was Patisserie Coralie.

I was going for the croissants.

As well as a strawberry croissant, with almond cream.

I've had the blueberry roll before and really liked it, but I skipped it today.

They have many different flavors of macaroons, which I had never had. Today they had a couple of samples, so I tried one and it was wonderful. Maybe I'll try a whole one the next time.

My croissant was really good. I love all the layers of dough.

The strawberry and almond cream croissant was fabulous.

A little bit of Paris outside the shop.

Our final stop of the morning was Hoosier Mama, not that I needed any additional "research" here! We had a biscuit (fresh out of the oven), Moroccan lamb hand pie and a slice of cherry berry pie. What a way to close out my five-part breakfast!

Her biscuits are really good.

This was the first time I've had one of the hand pies, and it was great.

The cherry berry pie, strawberry, raspberry and blueberry. Fabulous.

It was a great morning, and I was happy to sacrifice myself once again for the good of the group.

The Donut labeled "'The Dude' Goo" looks like it might be a Bacon Maple Glazed kinda deal.  If that's accurate, and you were to pick up a few of those for later consumption, I wouldn't be too upset or anything.  Might even reimburse you.

Jeff, if you're saying that you're going to be starting at Hoosier Mama and not making the earlier stops and would like a few of the Dudes, I'll pick them up for you, no reimbursement necessary.

I am saying all of the above, except that there must be some form of reimbursement involved.  I'll swap you a few Dudes for an Edzo Burger, how's that sound?

David - These first four stops have the potential to be among the Top Ten First Four Stop List of all time...those photos have some amazing potential!  Gotta figure out the lox dilemma....

Sounds like a plan. How many Dudes would you like? Any others?
And, by the way, considering my ever-advancing age, a friendly reminder as we get closer might not be a bad idea.

I could stop at Kaufman's and pick up some lox for you, if you'd like. I would imagine a half pound would be enough to share with some leftovers. I wish that bagel had been better! It's no Meshuggah, although I've had them when they've been great, still warm from the ovens, so there's hope.

I didn't mention that there's no place to sit at New York Bagel, so we ate in the parking lot using the hatchback of my friend's car.

With the addition of Poochie's to the lineup, I figured we'd switch our "peace offering" from an Edzo's Burger to a Char Salami.  Objections?

I am not sure what an Edzo's is but I sure do know what a Poochie's Char Salami is and that is one mighty fine offer. One of my favourites from the Chicago Crawl.

I said 30/70 initially but unfortunately am down to 0/100. Sounds like a great idea but timing just isn't going to work this year.
