I said 30/70 initially but unfortunately am down to 0/100. Sounds like a great idea but timing just isn't going to work this year.

I totally understand. We’ll miss you.

That's a lot of Edzo burgers you'll be ordering....

With the addition of Poochie's to the lineup, I figured we'd switch our "peace offering" from an Edzo's Burger to a Char Salami.  Objections?

Buddy

Mustard and grilled onions?

Without doubt.  Might even add relish and sport peppers on mine.

Davidsanders
I'd probably go for a char dog, but I might take a small bite of a char salami. Never had one.
David

From whose Char Dog do you figure you're getting this so called "bite"?  I've seen the ChiTownDiner protect half a donut hole like a junkyard dog chewing on a day old bone.  If you want to sacrifice a finger for a "bite" of a Poochie's Char Salami (might be worth it), be my guest.

I see your point. Maybe I should get one, cut it in half, and auction off the other half.

Of course, if I get a chunk taken out of a finger, I could wind up with a few extra weeks off from work. Win-win?

More Evanston Day research. One more time at Hoosier Mama.

I started with one of her sticky biscuits, made with biscuit dough, with cinnamon and a light glaze. I think I’ve posted this before. I like it a lot.

Blueberry! Possibly my favorite of her pies. I wait all year for it.

Add a little whipped cream.

If she has the blueberry pie when we are there, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

David

Edit. I forgot to add this YouTube link of me finishing off the pie.

I'm hoping that the food on my trip will be half as good as the food in the photos here seems to be. At the very least, I now know of a few places in Evanston that I hope to check out some day. That patisserie looks w o n d e r f u l.

Even more Evanston Day research. I haven't been to Poochie's very often, and with all the talk about the char salami sandwich, I figured I'd better give it a try. Not sure I would go as far as mind-altering, but I certainly enjoyed it.

It's definitely charred, and I loved the flavor and the texture. I had it with mustard, and also added some relish.

They gave me a little tray of condiments to try, since I was so unsure of what I wanted on it.

I didn't want to eat all the bread so I wound up breaking it apart and stacking it onto about half the bread.

I loved the fries. I've always loved the fries at Poochie's!

I think this will be a fun next-to-last stop, before ending with Graeter's.

As much as I enjoy Poochie's Char Salami, I agree with you about the abundance of bread.  CTD might not appreciate the change, but I usually ask for mine on a Hot Dog or Polish bun.  The meat to bread ratio works better for me, and I don't miss the chew of the French bread.

I remember fondly the char salami from Buddy's hot dog crawl 3 years ago.  In a similar vein, The Old Fashioned here in Madison has a grilled summer sausage sandwich that's delicious.

When I was getting ready to go to Poochie's tonight and knowing I was going to order the char salami, I assumed it would be served on a hot dog bun, and wondered what that would be like. I didn't know about the French bread until I was told by the person taking my order. The next time I order it (most likely on July 29th) I'll try it on a hot dog bun.

I prefer my Poochie's charred salami with mustard, well done grilled onions, and Vern's cheddar cheese, the same way I dress a Poochie's Char cheddar Polish. https://wgntv.com/2014/12/12/hot-dog-university/

Change can be good....it can even be great!  Just as long as we add grilled onions.  We are already in agreement on mustard and relish.  I can re-position the sport peppers.

Even more Evanston Day research. I have been going to Bennison's Bakery probably since the late 1960s, or at least since the 1970s. I've ordered numerous cakes for various celebrations over the years, and I've always enjoyed them. I've also gotten the occasional cookie, cupcake, donut, pastries, Paczkis, etc. I started wondering if maybe I made a mistake leaving it off the Evanston Day Crawl, and if we could fit it in somehow.

Some photos of all the offerings.

There were so many things to choose from that looked good. I decided to go with some of my favorites. I love croissants.

I also got a lemon poppyseed donut.

And a cherry slice.

While everything was okay or good, I think our scheduled Crawl stops are far superior to what I had at Bennison's today. There just wasn't anything that was particularly special.

Bennison's Bakery is maybe the only 'artisanal' bakery I've ever visited that had every loaf of bread encased in a plastic bag which, imho, is a 1,000x worse than putting ketchup on a hot dog or even putting that on a well done prime Porterhouse.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't been to the Evanston location. I went to the Andersonville location once and thought it was pretty good. We all agreed it wasn't worth driving the extra 15 minutes to get there when Hoosier Mama is so close. I'll try to get to First Slice Evanston before too long. I'm friendly enough with Paula Haney (Mama herself) that I feel a bit strange when I go someplace else. I often find myself confessing to her, that I was forced to go somewhere else, but it just didn't compare.

There are only two items that will bring me to Bennison's Bakery: the Parisienne macarons and the maple bacon long John(which they're out of most of times I'm in to purchase one).
