A lunch stop along I-80/90, between Elkhart, IN and Toledo, OH?

Mr. Maki and I will be making our way from Chicago to Pittsburgh next Thursday for the Pittsburgh Crawl.  We think we'll be ready for lunch around the time we hit Elkhart, IN and will be really hungry by the time we get to Toledo, OH.  Once I get off the highway, I don't want to get more than 15-20 minutes off track, so "no" to the hour it takes to get to the place in Ft. Wayne that Buddy suggested.

Ideally a cafe or diner, extra bonus points for good pie.  Nothing too elaborate- we want to make sure we're hungry again by the time we get to Ralph Melton & icecreamchick's house!

Just for the benefit of future readers of this thread, I'll repeat my response from the Crawl thread:

On the drive to Chicago last year, we stopped for a very good lunch at the Village Inn in Middlebury, IN. We've also had a good meal at Schmucker's in Toledo, OH. Either of these should be only about 10 minutes off I-80.

I suggest you change your plans and leave Wednesday afternoon, with an overnight stay at Pokagon State Park.  I stayed there last summer and enjoyed my visit, although by the time I reached Angola I was too full to squeeze in a meal at Village Kitchen.

Tony Packo's in Toledo is a great Roadfood place to visit. I had a great meal there a few years back.

Clay's looks like a pretty good option.  Not too far off the tollway, classic Roadfood setting, simple menu with Fried Biscuits(!).  What more could you want?  I'll need to check them out next time I head for Cleveland.

    Damn, they all look good.

I think we'll save one of the Toledo stops for the way back home...probably Schmucker's because it's so damn cute.

And we're leaning towards Clay's for Thursday!

Make sure you check Sunday closings if that's your return day...that may dictate choices!

If you want a humble restaurant serving classic diner fare such as hot turkey sandwiches and daily specials, you want Schmucker's.

If you want a restaurant that serves outstanding homemade pie, you want Schmucker's.

If you want a friendly place, where the waitresses will call you hon or sweetie, you want Schmucker's.

If you want a restaurant that is open early and closes late, you want Schmucker's.

If you want a restaurant with a great neon sign, you want Schmucker's.

If you are hungry on a Sunday, go somewhere else.  They are closed on Sundays.

If you want to stop in Elkhart there is a very good burger place just north of the toll road exit 92 (5 minutes) called Flippin' Cow.  It overlooks Simonton Lake and has stellar burgers, fish and other casual options.

Also just before that is Simonton Lake Drive In that Buffetbuster would recommend for their root beer.

Three minutes south of the toll road is The Chubby Trout.  It has good food in a slightly nicer atmosphere.

A little further away in downtown Elkhart is the 5 Star Dive Bar that has a real nice selection of burgers and sandwiches.

If you decide in advance that you want to stop in Elkhart for lunch I would be happy to meet you and break bread with more roadfooders.  My appetite for meeting fellow roadfood enthusiasts was deepened by the great time my wife and I had at the Chicago gathering last Thursday having had the chance to meet ChiTownDiner, ChiBears15, and Mr & Mrs Buddy Roadhouse.

    Safe Travels,

Thanks for the tips and the shout out Rocky.  It was nice meeting you and your wife as well.  I especially appreciate the recommendations because abe_froeman is my daughter.  Now she and her husband, Mr. Maki, won't starve to death on their travels.

    You're not really a Roadfooder until you've been TTM'ed!!

Thanks for the heads-up y'all.  If traffic is great and it doesn't take too long to get to Toledo, maybe we'll try to make Schmucker's on the way in on Thursday.
