A visit to Breitbach's (Balltown IA)

Even though my annual visit to Des Moines takes me through Dubuque almost every time, up until this year I'd never been to Breitbach's up in Balltown.

On weekdays there's a lunch buffet.

While broasted chicken and mashed potatoes are part of the buffet, I ordered mine off the menu so I could save a couple of bucks and not be sidetracked.

Also, BPTs are not part of the buffet and since I was there I wasn't going to miss out.

The BPT was solid but if forced to choose I'd take the broasted chicken, hands down.  It had a nicely crisp crust and the meat was juicy and well-seasoned, things I personally find to be critical to a good piece of chicken.
And as an added bonus, whether heading north from Breitbach's by car or by foot there's a great view to the east.

What a history that place has. Didn’t’t Jesse James eat there, in the original building? Of course, they have had several unfortunate fires, so that was a few buildings ago. Good looking chicken. Thanks for posting the photos.
