Alt n' Bach's Town Tap (Madison, WI)

A few days before Christmas I met a former coworker for lunch at Alt n' Bach's Town Tap, off the Beltline by the old American TV store.  It's been around for a long time and I've eaten there a bit over the years, so when she suggested it I was definitely in agreement.

The Thursday special is a prime rib French dip sandwich and it was very good.  Tender beef, a nicely toasted roll, and flavorful jus all worked together, and Randi was kind enough to share a small piece with me.

But when I go Alt n' Bach's I go for one thing (if it's not a Lenten Friday): the patty melt (hold the onions).  They'll cook the beef to order and there's plenty of melted cheese between it and the grilled rye slices, and it's been a favorite of mine for a long time.

If given the choice, I'll take a patty melt over a cheeseburger almost every time!

????????????????????????????????????????
I'm sorry, we can no longer be friends.

How do you order a PATTY MELT, hold the onions?  Grilled onions are the defining ingredient of a PATTY MELT.  Otherwise it's just a cheeseburger on toast.

It can't be because you don't like onions; you're a freakin' con-a-sewer (couldn't spell connoisseur, so went with the phonetic spelling) of French Onion Soup.  You're not ordering your French Onion Soup, "hold the onions", are you?  Cuz if it were my restaurant I'd just toss yer butt outta the joint for being a smart-aleck.

Frankly, I'm dumbfounded (yes I know, emphasis on the "dumb"--hah--beat you to it!) , speechless, and appalled.  I don't know if I can even look at you at the next Contingent meet-up.  You may need to buy me several Brandy Old Fashioneds just so I can stand being in the same room with you.

Trying to figure out who you really are,
Buddy

You thought we're friends?

When it comes to onions I'm pretty particular about how I'll eat them.  As a recipe ingredient they're usually fine and I do like the soup as long as it's not too thick, but I prefer my onion rings fried really dark and I don't care for grilled or raw onions on anything.  And since "patty" refers to beef and "melt" refers to cheese, a patty melt without onions is still a patty melt in my book.  And Wikipedia backs me up, so there.

So if a patty melt without onions is a cheeseburger on toast, is a cheeseburger with onions a patty melt on a bun?

Word on the street is that the onionless patty melt (hailed by millions as the greatest development of the 21st century) was so popular that the staff was being driven beyond the brink of exhaustion and/or insanity.
