Andy Griffith passes

Sheriff Taylor has hung up his star and Ben Matlock has tried his last case.  Truly a television legend...

Story.

I've met a number of people over the years who didn't know that Andy Griffith was a gifted comedian (not just an actor) and writer. For proof of that check out this You-Tube version of his What It Was Was Football standup routine.

MH:  You are correct as I recall "No time for Sargents".

I don't particularly get into religious music but I bought "I Love to tell the story" back in 1996.  I still have it around the house someplace.  Beautiful music.

No, WJ, it wasn't an early version of reality TV.  (There was no such thing!)  It was real TV;  real people doing real things that everyone else could relate to.  The characters on the show (and other similar shows) were like your next-door neighbors or good friends (or people you would want as next-door neighbors or good friends).  It was funny at times, and sad at other times, just like real life, but never crude, lewd or rude (which reality TV seems to like to specialize in).

This is still funny today & that isn't true of a lot of comedy routines.

I always loved The Andy Griffith Show.  Aunt Bea, Goober, Barney Fife, Floyd the barber and Otis the drunk among many others.  Hard to believe that little Opie turned out to be Ron Howard, director and creator of many films.

Andy Griffith was a gifted actor(A Face In the Crowd), comedian(What it was was football) and a cagey judge of what was funny(It was he who decided to be straight man and let Don Knotts  and others do the jokes on his show). He was a talented man and it was always a pleasure to watch him on Matlock or Andy griffith. I could not overstate my admiration for his talent. I will miss him.

We sure lost a bright star of humanity when Mr. Griffith passed. I have seen him in "A Face In The Crowd". I was surprised at his dramatic acting skills. Thanks for the other links to his lesser known work.

Some of you fellow Griffith fans might enjoy this short video published by our local TV station about a guy who lives in Mt. Airy and keeps the show alive cruising around in an old-timey '67 Ford squad car. It brought a smile to my face, and I hope it will for you too.

Good video...we had a Roadfood gather some years back out that way and I got a chance to visit "Mayberry" and loved it.  The pork chop sandwich brings back memories!

Andy Griffith was also very nice and approachable.

He was a collector of coin-op toys and machines.  Met him at a trade show put on and sponsored by Loose Change Magazine.

I was there looking for antique or collectible gaming related materials, specifically the glass plates from the tops of old slot machines.

Nice man.  Rest in Peace, Andy.

Ah, Andy hasn't been with us for four years.

That said, I still remember his work fondly - the comedy record in the late '50's, his lead role in A Face in the Crowd, and, of course, as Opie's Dad.

By no means am I going to disrespect the late Andy Griffith, and you'll have to pardon the pun, but how on earth did someone manage to dig up this old thread?

wanderingjew,

I am a new member and timid about starting new threads. So I Google searched for anything that mentioned the late, great Mr. Griffith on Roadfood. I picked what, in my judgment, was the most appropriate thread to share a video I enjoyed, and hoped other Andy fans would too. One member commented that he indeed enjoyed it, so mission accomplished.

I also belong to another food site that discourages new threads and merges them with sometimes decades older ones. So I am kind of whipped about starting new threads. There are several other mentions of the show or Andy here, and I have participated in a couple of them as an avid fan. The references occurred in less Andy-focused threads, so that is why I chose this one to post in. As usual, I have probably given you way more information than you really wanted to what might have been a rhetorical question.  Sorry.

Mr. Griffith makes personal visits to my dining room, which is completely open to my big kitchen, many evenings at 8:00 PM on local broadcast MeTV. We ate dinner with Andy, Barney, Aunt Bea, Opie, and the Darling clan tonight. He is still with me in memory and in my dining room.

So he has been with me for the past four years, and will be, even if MeTV replaces the reruns I enjoy, because I own a bunch of DVD's and VCR tapes of the show and pick them up whenever I see them for sale.

Cheers, and love your trip reports!

Don't be timid, I never think twice about starting new thread, however when I do, there will be an automatic suggestion box showing past possibly related threads, if your new thread matches one of those past threads then certainly add it to that pre-existing thread. What you did sounds like way too much work.

Well, it was a rhetorical question, but honestly, I just couldn't figure out how you managed to dig up a very old, forgotten thread, now that you explained it, I get it..
