Anna's Pizzeria (Sun Prairie, WI)

Anna's Pizzeria has been on my "I need to check it out" list for awhile and when a coworker recently told me how much she likes Anna's pizza I drove up there a few Saturdays ago.

When I walked in I first thought that maybe some sort of party had either happened or was going to happen, but Anna told me that she discontinued dine-in service awhile back because it was becoming too physically demanding for her.

Fortunately the taps are still functional so when she said it'd be 20 minutes or so until my pizza was ready I cozied up to a cold mug of MGD.

Half sausage, half pepperoni, and mushrooms on the whole thing.  When the pizza was ready Anna asked if I'd like it kept warm until I was done; confused, I suddenly realized I had drank only about half of my beer.  Then she had a change of heart, set the box on the counter, and told me to have a slice so I could taste it while it was still hot.

Like my visit to Jim's in Janesville a few months back I was again rewarded with that style of pizza that seems to extend from Madison south to Rockford: reasonably thin crust, mildly seasoned sauce, plenty of cheese, sausage with a touch of fennel, and the canned mushrooms of which we Midwesterners are so fond.  I've seen a couple of online reviews that decry Anna's pizza as bland; while it's true you don't feel like there's an oregano bush in your mouth after a bite, at the same time you don't suffer from spice fatigue, either.  And Anna makes a terrific crust: light and airy yet still crisp and sturdy, and while I might've liked it to have maybe just a touch more salt it's not worth it to jeopardize the crust in general.

Last but not least, Anna herself is very personable and because I was the first walk-in customer of the day we were able to chat for a bit, and that made the wait much more pleasant.  Even though I drove 25 miles each way for a carryout pizza it was 90 minutes or so well-spent on a Saturday afternoon.

Aside from the mushrooms (I'm allergic), the pepperoni (I just don't like it on apizza) and the cut that looks pretty darned good.

Yer darn tootin'!

Shrimp?

Shrimp on pizza seems like it'd be a coastal thing...not so much in California?

Shrimp on pizza with all the other available toppings seems wrong.

Shrimp with pesto or roasted garlic oil...  maybe

I still want a clam pie.

I can remember driving through New Jersey in 1965 -- on U.S. 22 -- headed for a new job in West Virginia nd seeing pizzeria signs all over the place advertising shrimp apizza. I recall wondering what sort of idiots eat around there.

Looks like that pizza has plenty of space for a certain kind of mushroom...

We'll leave them off your pizza.  The one for me, Lleechef, and Leethebard will have a triple topping.

I wonder whether you could even get mushrooms on the white clam pie. Or anything else, for that matter. I also wonder why anyone would want to.

If you have ever eaten a white clam pizza, you would never in the world want another topping on it!

Well I sure wouldn't. I find it hard to believe anyone would.

We have a new chain here called 800 Degrees.  They might be everywhere.  Went there a couple of weeks ago.  One of their standard pizzas is a clam pizza.  Delighted, I ordered it.

I don't know what you call the type of ordering.  There is a line where you order what you want as you move down the line, paying at the end.

I got to the end to be informed....  We are out of clams.

Crushed!

I forget the name of the pizza that I ordered but it was whole roasted garlic cloves swimming in oil and they had the nerve to throw arugala on top of the pizza.

Not edible, even after scraping all the green weed off of the top.

It's the Chipotle Syndrome. Another chain operating the same way is Pizza Cucinova, which is an offshoot of Sbarro's.

That's the movie with Jack Lemmon and Jane Fonda, right?
