Anthony Bourdain Dead at 61 - Suicide!

And I am angry.
How could he?
How dare he?
He had one of the best 'jobs' in the world and was marvelous at it.

Yeah, R.I.P., and all that.
But … what demons possessed him?
I'd like to kick their ass.

He, like Kate Spade, was an icon in his field, beloved by many, worth who knows how much money.

Suicide, or that which wishes not to be named, is a beast beyond most's comprehension. But it's like sleeper agent, placed in your brain long ago by things beyond your control. After years of confidence and not being able to connect to it, it can suddenly come online.

It's not just the usual triggers: depression, anxiety, fear, addiction, inescapable guilt, it can be the strangest and oddest things, too. And the most terrifying part of suicide is how it suddenly goes from being unthinkable, to the easiest thing in the world.

The simplest, most elegant solution a problem that is beyond obvious and beyond solving any other way. And so suddenly, your life becomes about managing this constant, evergreen impulse. I cannot explain what it means to go through 60% of a given day fighting the very thought.

And it does not matter what success, what joy, and what beauty you can leave behind. The cruel irony is that in truly grasping hold of those lovely things, it will only serve to show you that the impulse is STILL THERE. And it will always be there.

Until you can somehow, someway, beat back the tides of original programming that goes back so far that you do not know another way of life outside of it. You only know that you've been constantly running from it and in denial. What creates such a thing?

Well, we call it trauma, but it is so much more then that term can allow, and so often laced into the daily traumas that informed our every day sense of the world.

It all forms a brain full of imperfect coping mechanisms, which inadvertently creates the suicidal instinct, which is only the most perfect and silencing coping mechanism of all. And there it is: the reveal that the biggest problem with suicide is that it is genuinely a solution.

And to get outside of it, to live with it, and to effectively take all that pain and find a way to give back and help is something most could never imagine. In that sense, what Tony did was Herculean. He was the poet americana. I owe him so much I cannot accurately explain.

He gave a gift and you do not realize the strength it took for him to give it. And while I beat my chest and shout to the ****ing rooftops about how this has happened, there is the part of me that... simply knows.

And is so proud that he made it this long.

I actually cried many times while thinking about him since the news broke.

He was always so interested about where he was and asked the most intelligent questions.

He had an uncanny ability of elevating the simplest of street foods to "gourmet" status.

I loved him dearly and will miss him terribly.

RIP dear man. Besides family, you leave behind, a legacy of the knowledge of food and the world in general.

JRPfeff requested Bourdain's reflections on Waffle House be posted; this I am happy to do.

To be honest, my knowledge of Anthony Bourdain is weak.  I don't have pay TV and I don't watch online video because it costs me money, although I've been intermittently watching "Mind of a Chef" on PBS for awhile.

That being said, after the news broke this story started floating around online in multiple places:

Maybe there's a lesson in there for all of us.

Thank you for posting that video MetroplexJim. I think it outlines a fitting tribute to Bourdain. Go out and get loaded, then head to a Waffle House and duplicate his meal in the video. Sure beats the French Laundry.

This morning - to my delight - I learned that Bourdain had done an episode of "Parts Unknown" on my hometown, Pittsburgh.

I haven't watched it yet but I am certain that some parts of it will piss me off, others will have me nodding, swelling with pride and, perhaps, even shedding a tear.  That ability is why I so enjoyed his work.
