Apostle Islands and Bayfield, Wisconin

Hi everyone.  I'm spending some time with friends in Park Falls.  We want to take a day trip up to the Apostle Islands.  None of us have been around there before.  Any roadfood recommendations?

I've searched here and saw Gruenke's mentioned.  The Fat Radish deli looks fun, specializing in sandwiches and local produce.

Whadya think?

Just in case you missed it, Maggie's is reviewed here on Roadfood.  We stopped in about five years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the place.

Since highway 13 will take you right into Ashland you might want to make a stop at the Ashland Baking Company and if you're in town around lunchtime you can grab a bite at the South Shore Brewery.  Also, if you have the time the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center just west of town on US-2 is definitely worth it.  I know none of these places are in Bayfield but as long as you're in the area...

Have you eaten at Pal Café yet?

Not sure how far from Superior you will be but if you want a great burger, the Anchor Bar should not be missed. I was last there about 4 years ago. There is a review here on this site I believe.

If you make it to Madeline Island, do not miss Tom's Burned Down Bar. You will enjoy it. Tom is a real character that dances to his own inner beat. http://www.tomsburneddowncafe.com/

In Bayfield County, where the town of Delta once was, is the Delta Diner.  When I was young I used to fish the White River just south of there.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Since we only had a few hours up there, we didn't get to try much.  The timing worked out better for us to eat in Ashland,  But man, I'd love to spend several days there in the future.  I'm bookmarking this thread.

We did stop at Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center and had a nice walk. You're right, it was worth the visit.  For dinner we went to Deep Water in Ashland, which actually shares space with South Shore Brewery.  All three of us had different fish entrees.  My blackened trout was awesome, my friends had salmon salad and whitefish (I think).  We all loved it there, and that brewery makes good beer.  I had a Nut Brown Ale which I liked a lot.

As far as Park Falls, I did eat at Pal Café last year.  It was okay, I wasn't hugely thrilled with it.  Pretty good fish fry, but the homemade potato chips were soggy and chewy.

A place called Captain Nemo's Pub & Grub had amazing sub sandwiches, although I wish the rolls had more substance, they kind of collapsed under the weight and juice of the innerds.

For cheap and good ol' greasy breakfasts I recommend Jack's Corner Bar or Frontier Restaurant.

I sure had a great week.
