Crazy..insane...appetite inducing  post!   The even crazier thing is that you could add several more days onto the trip, by traveling west on I-70 deep into Kansas, and keep on chowing down on at classic RF spots in Topeka....Abilene...Salina  and Hays - not to mention the many small towns that have unsung little cafes.

I'd like that with a dog other than a dirty water dog!

It is a fried dog. The slight crispness of the casing added a lot.

Apparently, we mistimed the KC Crawl by a few months, specifically our stop at Betty Rae's Ice Cream Parlor.  If we were there right now we could be slurping up double scoop cones of this local delicacy.

I keep a fairly open mind about such things, but this one has me thinking twice, maybe even three times.

The Weather Channel is reporting major flash flooding around 103rd & State Line Rd in the Kansas City/Overland Park, KS area.  Looks like Indian Creek is overflowing its banks.  It runs right by Brobeck's BBQ.  Think dry thoughts for Doug and his crew.

I lived in the Armourdale area many years ago. KC has some bad flooding areas and my prayers go to those affected. There are strong and good people there who will help out when the bad times arise. Thanks for letting us know, Buddy.
Also, thanks to all for these wonderful posts. As one of the hidden and silent members, this forum has given me ideas to plan for some happy traveling.

Thanks for the kind words graypatches.  A lot of people put in a bunch of work to make this thread a success.  Their pictures and the chronicles of their experiences make this a valuable resource for many.  It's not too late for a certain beleaguered Roadfooder to redeem himself by adding his photos and thoughts to those already posted here.  If he took the time to do that, he could achieve the same kind of immortality reserved only for dominating sports teams like the 1985 Chicago Bears.  What ever happened to those guys?

On a side note, my local KC sources inform me that the area around Jerry's Cafe was totally "clobbered" by flooding.  No word if Jerry's was directly affected or if they're open for business.

What Photobucket taketh away, so shall Postimage provide.  Here are a few more shots related to the Kansas City Crawl.

Our caravan's (nagle, Wawa Mama, Pie Diva, Mrs. Roadhouse & myself) first stop was in Funks Grove, IL along Historic Route 66.

There are still people living in this rural community named after its founders.  The main commercial venture these days is the Maple Sirup (sic) company that taps local maples for their sap.  We stopped to see the original church and churchyard cemetery.

Our first stop on Thursday was for breakfast at Happy Gillis.

This picture was actually taken in winter 2016.  But this shot of three Chicagoans...

...ChiTownDiner, ChiBears15, and davidsanders was taken on the Crawl.  This must have been taken moments before their food was delivered, otherwise you'd just see a cartoon style blur of arms and silverware attacking the table.

A much calmer, more sedate table...

...with nagle, Crawl co-host CNW, big_g, and Wawa Mama enjoying some peace before the wild ride that was the 2017 Kansas City Crawl.

On our last night of the Crawl we invaded and occupied Hayes Hamburgers.

The happy couple, wanderingjew and JRPfeff.

And big_g, CTD, and schlotz wondering, "How are we possibly going to eat anything else tonight?  Wait, what do you mean there's another stop for Pie after this???"

And finally the group picture that says it all:

Weird Stuff indeed.
L-R: sfreader, CNW (patriotically hiding behind the flag), Pie Diva, JRPfeff, icecreamchick, ChiBears15, Ralph Melton, wanderingjew, nagle, big_g, Wawa Mama, Mrs. Bonk, ChiTownDiner, Mrs. Roadhouse, schlotz, BuddyRoadhouse, joerogo, and Bonk.  Not sure who the yellow guy is on the far right.

It was a great Crawl.  Thanks to all who participated!

joerogo, Oops, and thanks for spotting the error (now corrected).  And apologies to wj for the goof.

ChiTownDiner, Tweren't nuthin' to eat in Funks Grove.  It's just a nice little town we discovered many years ago as we were driving along Route 66.  There's a particularly lovely stretch of wooded road between the main part of town and the historic church and cemetery, the latter of which serves as evidence of possible extreme inbreeding.  90% of the names on the headstones are either Funk or Stubblefield.  Not a lot of outsiders there, although there are quite a few graves of Civil War soldiers.

Years ago, we used to stop at the Maple Sirup compound for a little "horse trading" on our way to visit family and friends in Kansas City.  An even swap of Roadhouse Bar-B-Que Sauce for Genuine Funks Grove Maple Sirup was a pretty good deal.  We did that for several years until someone in the Funk family married a guy who was just as dumb as me and started his own BBQ Sauce biz.  Suddenly they were no longer interested in trading.

The other attraction to stopping in Funks Grove used to be a visit to the Dixie Truckers Home in McLean, IL.  If you continue southwest on Route 66, The Dixie is right there at the next interchange to jump back on I-55.  As noted in the past, The Dixie used to be a reliable place to take a restroom break and even get a good country style meal.  Unfortunately, they were sold by local ownership to corporate overlords and the quality and character of the place has suffered greatly.

1bbqboy, as long as you've mentioned Weird Stuff Antiques, here's a sampling of just how weird the stuff is:

And that's just the outside of the building!  There was so much stuff inside it made me dizzy.  It would have made some great photos, but I couldn't see straight to focus.

Here's a good news/bad news/good news update on a couple of the places we visited on this Crawl:

Good News 1 - As some of you may know, parts of Kansas City were subject to massive flooding back in July.  There were rumors that Jerry's Cafe and Brobeck's Barbecue had suffered terrible water damage and might have been completely destroyed.  In fact, while both were in the direct path of the floodwaters, neither was affected in any way.  We're in KC right now and had meals at both places.  We're happy to report they're both going full steam and business is better than ever.

Bad News - Maybe it was the stress of those raging floodwaters comingthisclose, maybe he just had enough of running a popular BBQ Joint, but whatever it was, Doug Brobeck decided to sell the restaurant recently.  It sounds like a sad story for KC 'Que lovers, but that leads us to...

Good News 2 - The guy who bought Brobeck's appears to be totally committed to maintaining the quality and character of the place.  The entire original staff, including Doug's son, is still turning out the good stuff.  Mrs. Roadhouse and I split a delicious Smoked Chicken Dinner tonight.  It was accompanied by excellent BBQ Beans, slaw and White Cheddar Mac & Cheese.  And of course, the Ham Salad is just as good as it was when ChiTownDiner slept through it last April.

More to report as the week progresses.  Happy Holidays everyone!

Re: April 2017 St. Louis and Kansas City Roadfood Crawl 2017/12/23 01:59:15 (permalink)
More updates, observations, and musings on KC cookin'...

We made it back to LC's Hamburgers (it's been said before but needs to be emphasized: NO relation to LC's BBQ) tonight.  LC's was on the original list for the April Crawl but had to be 86'd at the last minute due to fatigue and full bellies.  We scheduled LC's and Hayes Hamburgers back to back on Saturday night.  Once we accepted the reality of too much food in one day, we decided to keep Hayes and save LC's for the next KC Crawl (and there will be one eventually).

So tonight, Mrs. Roadhouse and I made LC's a part of our personal Crawl, and I'm glad we did.  There are several KC Burger joints serving a similar style of the classic Smashed Down Griddle Burger. The well known Town Topic, Hayes, LC's, and local chain Winstead's (Calvin Trillin's favorite).  Some versions include thinly sliced onions mashed into the meat as it hits the griddle, not unlike the Oklahoma style Burger.  Others are just meat, but the onions, grilled or raw, figure prominently into the condiment arsenal.  LC's falls into the second category of "onions added after the fact".

Some of you may remember, after the Crawl ended and we all headed for home, wanderingjew stuck around an extra day or two and checked out some other places.  Among them LC's, who he declared superior to all the others.  I'm pleased to report he was, for once, FINALLY correct!

I ordered a double CheeseBurger with Grilled Onions and it was fantastic!  Great flavor, fabulous texture and appearance; it was the ideal upon which all other Smashed Down Burgers should be modeled.  After we finished eating, Mrs. Roadhouse immediately slathered up with Purel to get the grease off.  I, being a more sentimental soul, just used a napkin or two to wipe down, preserving the grilled onion and beef perfume for the ride home.

In spite of my admission that LC's was the better Burger, I still defend the decision to drop them and keep Hayes for the Crawl.  Architecturally, LC's is more of a standard fast food building; sterile, generic surroundings with limited seating.  Hayes has character and soul.  If we'd opted for LC's we would have missed the experience of slowly taking over the entire restaurant, then placing all our orders at once and watching the grillman's artistry as he juggled the hot flat iron space to churn out our food.  Overall, Hayes provided a fuller Roadfood "experience" that LC's lacks.

That said, LC's should be a top priority for anyone visiting KC on their own.

Buddy

P.S. I may have offended a couple of folks innocently enjoying their LC's Burgers while I was ordering.  I asked the counter girl to describe three specialty Burgers listed on the menu, the 911 Burger, the Peggy Burger, and the Double Justin Burger.

She started out, "Well, all three are covered in ranch dressing..."

"Stop," I interrupted, "Any Burger with ranch dressing is an abomination, and anyone who orders it that way should be dragged out behind the building and fed to feral dogs.  Just give me a Double CheeseBurger with Grilled Onions, ketchup, mustard and pickles."

As I turned and headed to my table I noticed a husband and wife trying to enjoy their Burgers.  It was fairly apparent both sandwiches were oozing a viscous, white substance that could only be ranch dressing.  Soon after i made my comments, even though they hadn't finished their meals, they got up and left.  So if they're out their reading this (Hah!), I apologize for ruining your meal.  You should have at least been allowed to finish your Burgers before you were dragged out to the feral dogs.
