Re: Spring 2018 Roadfood Crawl 2018/03/26 23:19:40 (permalink)
We are now 4 weeks out and I am starting to finalize my route to Nashville. I am trying to decide whether to travel the back roads through the Bootheel of Missouri or head down the Illinois side of the Mississippi. Other than Lambert's in Sikeston, Roadfood doesn't show anything in Southeast Missouri or Southern Illinois. What other sources do you use to plan your stops? All help appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

I very frequently use Google Maps.  When I come across a restaurant that looks like a possibility I look for a website, Facebook page, Yelp review, etc. and go from there.

Big_g's post sparked memories of a past road/camping trip to Southern Illinois about 15 years ago.  We were motivated by an article in the Chicago Tribune from 1993.  It described the 'Que culture around Shawnee National Forest as more in line with the Carolinas, and other points southeast, rather than that of its home state.  Mrs. Roadhouse and I decided to follow Southern Illinois BBQ Trail one October earlier this century and were richly rewarded with some fine Smoked Meats and even more gorgeous scenery.

Our current plan is to leave for Nashville a few days early and spend dome time meandering the bottom tip of our state.  We might even work our way down to Memphis to scratch a long standing itch for a Payne's BBQ Bologna Sandwich and Pulled Pork.

All of this could change in a heartbeat for us once we hit the road, but if you're planning to run through Southern Illinois, that article should serve you nicely.  Be sure to call ahead; not all those places are still in business, or in the same location they were at 15 years ago.

If you make it to Payne’s maybe we’ll run into each other. I’ll be heading for Memphis on Sunday. Payne’s is closed Sunday and Monday.

If we make it to Memphis at all, it'll likely be on Tuesday or Wednesday before heading east to Nashville.

I’ll be going to Payne’s for lunch and Cozy Corner for dinner in Tuesday, and hopefully Helen’s for lunch on Wednesday on my way to Nashville.

Cozy Corner Has some great sausage as well as the standard pulled pork and rib, Plus the Cornish hens are pretty tasty too.

I've had the ribs, Cornish Hen, sausage and bologna all recommended to me, and the Roadfood review recommends the sliced pork shoulder. Seeing that I'll be there by myself, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get out of there alive. I suppose I could get the two rib plate (with sides), a sausage sandwich (no sides) and a side order of the Cornish Hen (meat only). I could bring the leftovers to Nashville!

I'm still not going to Nashville
As much as Chi Town Diner tried to convince me to cut my Colorado/Utah trip  a day short and fly to Nashville  from Denver on Friday and fly home Sunday, I have finally come to term with ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS fly home two evenings before I return to work after a long vacation..... I'm too old to burn the candle at both ends anymore...

Tops BBQ should be at the top of your list for Memphis.  It is Dale's favorite bbq restaurant in Memphis and is on his all time best list.  Just something to consider.

A search of Cairo turned up D's Chicken, Shemwell's Barbecue and Nu Diner.  A report on at least one of them would be appreciated.

Now I’m confused. I don’t remember reading anything on Roadfood about Tops, and I thought that the general consensus was that Payne’s had the best pulled pork sandwich on earth. I don’t know how I’ll decide what to leave out.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I would have hated to have wasted a meal. I’m glad not to have wound up the butt of your joke.

If you are driving from Memphis to Nashville, please include Helen’s BBQ in Brownsville. I can’t imagine you would be disappointed. We could smell the sweet perfume of bbq a half mile away!

It's definitely part of my plan. I'm hoping to get there when they open at 10, although I had seen a post from Grant Googans saying he left Memphis at 10 and arrived just when they opened, so I'm not sure when they actually open. There's a photo of their menu on Yelp that Monday-Friday 10-7.

No one has responded about going to see the Triple-A baseball Nashville Sounds on Friday.

We're just going to go on our own unless anyone else is interested. Let me know in the next couple of days.

I think it will be a "game time decision" for us. I am still hoping that I can score a reasonably priced seat for a Predators game some time during the week.

The ballgame sounds like fun, but I think we're going to reserve that time for seeking out various honky tonks, jook joints, and other establishments of ill repute.

Or we might take a nap.

Or like nagle and Wawa Mama, me may call an audible and check out the ballgame.

A search of Cairo turned up D's Chicken, Shemwell's Barbecue and Nu Diner.  A report on at least one of them would be appreciated.

Don't know nuthin' about D's Chicken or Nu Diner, although they both look pretty cute.  We visited Shemwell's on our Great Shawnee National Forest Adventure almost 20 years ago.  Back then the exterior of the building had a definite "shack" vibe and the inside was a real time capsule of classic diner ambiance.  The food was okay; definitely not our favorite of the trip, but made more palatable by the throwback feel of the total experience.

Since then, they've cleaned up the outside and remodeled the dining area to have a more generic fast food feeling.  So if the original ambiance is gone and the food was just okay to begin with, where does that leave you?

If you want some good reading and solid information about downstate Illinois BBQ, check out this thread at LTHForum.com, written by Da Beef (known on Roadfood as "King T").

Just a hair over two weeks until we all converge on Music City, so it's a good time to bump this thread and pass along some info.  ChiTownDiner and I are scheduled to get together this Friday to polish up his infamous Spreadsheet.  We're hoping to publish details for the trip some time next week.

Some of our plans include making reservations at certain restaurants.  If for some reason you won't be joining us, now is the time to let us know.  Let me emphasize: REGRETS ONLY.  If your name is on the list of attendees, we'll assume you'll be there for the entire Crawl, unless otherwise noted (i.e., later arrivals for Sundancer7, will_work_4_bbq, and buffetbuster & Mariton).

We're getting close folks!  Pull out your dancin' shoes and get ready to two step.
