Just a hair over two weeks until we all converge on Music City, so it's a good time to bump this thread and pass along some info.  ChiTownDiner and I are scheduled to get together this Friday to polish up his infamous Spreadsheet.  We're hoping to publish details for the trip some time next week.

Some of our plans include making reservations at certain restaurants.  If for some reason you won't be joining us, now is the time to let us know.  Let me emphasize: REGRETS ONLY.  If your name is on the list of attendees, we'll assume you'll be there for the entire Crawl, unless otherwise noted (i.e., later arrivals for Sundancer7, will_work_4_bbq, and buffetbuster & Mariton).

We're getting close folks!  Pull out your dancin' shoes and get ready to two step.

Buddy

Not sure about the dancing, but I sure am ready to eat!

Me too!!!

Wait, Buddy, are we allowed to reply if we are also ready to eat, or just if we're not?

I wonder if Buddy and CTD are still meeting, disagreeing about spread sheet VS schedule.

There is great discussion going on right now between CTD, Davidsanders, and ChiBears15 regarding the schedule.  I have wisely chosen to remain silent for the moment while they hash things out.  Between the three of them, I think they've managed to use up my cellphone plan's text allowance; 70+ before 2pm, probably over a hundred by now.

I'm so bedazzled by the many colors of the Spreadsheet, I'm still trying to make sense of it all.  There is progress being made, and a near final version should be visible later this week.  Patience grasshopper, that which you seek will come to you when it is ready.

It's a struggle. Gregg wants to cut back to only 15 restaurants per day, but I'm negotiating to get him up to 25. Danny thinks 18 would be more sane. I'm insisting on a food taster for everyone. We should be ready to post it by May 16th.

Hi Gary,
I think you told me this last year, but can you remind me what you had at 17th St? I'm planning on stopping at the one in Marion.
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to seeing you next week!

I'll jump in while Big_g considers his answer.  We paid two visits to 17th St. BBQ when we were in Southern Illinois about 15 years ago.  We were unimpressed the first time we ate there, but thought maybe it was a fluke and gave them another chance.  Our second time around was better, but still failed to live up to the expectations one has of a three time Memphis in May Grand Champion.  IIRC, the best thing we had in those two experiences was the Smoked Chicken.

We'll be spending a couple of days in that same area next week, as we make our way to Nashville.  Who knows, we might even give them a third go around.

I will second Buddy's experience.
17th St was the absolute worst BBQ experience of my life and I will never return.
waited over an hour for the privilege of attempting to eat dried out leather.
I will say the fried pickles were excellent.

David,
to the best of my recollection...I can find the photo's...I did ribs, pulled pork and sausage.
got there on the back side of lunch and everything was Tasty..sausage had a good snap and a little heat, pulled pork was moist without being gummy and the rib was flavorful..not "the" best I ever had...but I'd drive across town to get some.

Hope you enjoy!

Buddy is converting Excel to a Word doc for easy printing and distribution.

If you want the Excel version, PM me your non-Roadfood email address.

Ralph - would you be kind enough to get Group Me or whatever is the latest up and running.

If you know your arrival or anticipated join the group stop, please post here so we can keep an eye out.

i know several folks have optional plans from hockey to baseball to wandering the rock piles in Colorado to everything else.  Feel free to join in where ever.

Couple of serious items...we have 5 reservations of 4 at Husk for lunch on Thursday.  We show 19 coming and we need to really be on that as the reservation holder may be charged for empty seats.

We have a reservation for 25 on Friday at 12:30pm at the Loveless Cafe.  I think everyone is in on that except Paul and Roz who are dining earlier.

Toss out any other good ideas...spreadsheets are made to be audiblized!

ChiTownDiner-
Shame on me for six weeks for not thinking to suggest a stop between Louisville and Nashville.

Right at the top of my restaurant/pie shop list to try someday is The Whistle Stop in Glendale, KY, which looks to be a short distance off I-65.  Might be worth stopping in, at least for a slice or two to go.

And you say a gentle transition to Nashville?   Meanwhile, your actual arrival in town will look more like something from a Mad Max movie.

I still remember my pies from Charlotte's Eats & Sweets in Keo, Arkansas. Especially the coconut cream.

I actually showed these pictures to Paula Haney of Hoosier Mama Pie. I really like her coconut cream pie, which doesn't have meringue, but this one was so impressive. I was hoping she might make a special like this some day. I don't go as often as I did when she first opened in Evanston. I was going three or more times a week for awhile.

Re: Spring 2018 Roadfood Crawl 2018/04/20 19:09:01 (permalink)
As promised, here's the itinerary for the Nashville Crawl.  As the organizers take a close look at it in this form, there may be some changes and corrections.  I've started the schedule with Wednesday night dinner.  ChiTownDiner will be in Nashville earlier than that.  Anyone who is interested in joining him should contact him directly via PM for details.

EDIT 4/21, 4:45pm: I've updated the list to include those Wednesday early bird stops in Nashville.  Also, Saturday night/Sunday morning's Midnight-3am breakfast at Monell's Cafe has been included.  All references to "optional" and "official" stops have been removed.  So, all stops are now REQUIRED or your screen name "meat ranking" drops down to Bologna Sandwich (and not Fried or BBQ'd, just ordinary.  Without mustard.  Or cheese.  On Wonder Bread.)

More later.
