A few points of "contention"....

The 1st spreadsheet posts list the Wednesday afternoon stops but I'm feeling some audibles coming...hoping Ralph will start turning us on to Group Me soon!  I know a few folks will be arriving on Wednesday...and will be hungry.

We do have a vote coming up on Thursday afternoon - Ed's vs. Bolton's...feel free to weigh in especially if you have been there before.

Monell's on Sunday is actually Sunday Lunch/Dinner.  It begins at 11am just as breakfast ends and we plan on getting there at 10:30am to ensure we sit together.  We are hoping for a Stroud's like meal.

While Swett's is listed as a Meat + 2, don't despair as they can easily accommodate a Meat + 3 or 4!

Perhaps the most nefarious alteration of the spreadsheet occurs with the words Optional vs. Official being inserted willy nilly!  I find those words to be exclusionary and want folks to know there is nothing "Optional" about some of these stops, nor are there levels of Officialness!  The "Day at the Beach" AND "Day at the Spa" tours have been combined into "The One Fine Day" tour and is occurring right now out west under the watchful eye of the Sultan of Stuffies.  Please join in on some of the early stops no matter how much some folks want you to stay in bed....

Re: Spring 2018 Roadfood Crawl 2018/04/21 16:13:42 (permalink)
Just call me Mr. Nefarious.

I labeled those early stops as "optional" because they weren't on Davdsanders original list and were put there "willy nilly" by one of his editors.  If you're the sort of person who can eat three breakfasts and not need to take a nap at 3pm, while missing out on some spectacular Ham Salad, then by all means hit those early stops.

Yes, I did describe Swett's as a "Meat & Two" restaurant, because that's how they describe themselves on their website menu.  CTD is correct in that they can easily accommodate an extra vegetable to make your meal a "Meat & Three."  For that matter, they can serve you a Meat & 4, 5, or 6, all the way up to 12 (that's all they've got); it's just a matter of how much you want to spend.  That's probably true of the other Meat & Threes as well.

Also, it's been pointed out that I omitted a midnight-3am breakfast stop at Monell's Cafe on Saturday night (technically Sunday morning).  Oh, you guys were serious about that?  I'll put it in immediately.

Now that the list has been updated, you can copy and paste it into a Word document and print it out.  I'll have a few extra copies with me, but not enough for everyone on the Crawl.  BTW, because things can potentially continue to change, you might want to wait another day or two before printing it out.

I've confirmed with our resident Tech Genius, Ralph Melton, that he'll get a GroupMe account going for us sometime in the next 48 hours.  For those unfamiliar, once you sign up you'll be in constant touch, through your cellphone, with everyone in the group.  It's a great way to share pictures and recommendations of new discoveries.  And if you get separated from the group you can find out where we are and catch up. I urge everyone to participate in this unique function of the Crawl.  It really adds to the fun.

That's it for now!
Buddy

If we've been on GroupMe before, will we automatically be added?

By the way, remember that if you don't make every stop on the crawl your screen name will be moved to the Hall of Shame and you'll never be allowed to attend another one. (Just kidding, obviously)

Some of you are aware that Roz was promoted to assistant dean at ETSU a couple of months ago.  Recent events have given her the opportunity to be promoted again to associate dean.  This is of course a tremendous opportunity but along with opportunity comes intense responsibility.  Unfortunately Roz will be involved in graduation events, new students, many weekend meetings and other events required by the position.

Unfortunately and regretfully we will be unable to attend.  This is very disappointing for the both of us for not only missing some great food opportunities but reuniting with many old friends.

I've started a GroupMe with the people I had phone numbers for. I didn't have contact information for these folks:

chickenplucker and Linda

(I only added people on the "In for sure" list, not the "expressed interest".)

If you want me to add you to the group, text me at 412-580-5644.

With the sad news (for happy reasons) that Sundancer and Roz will not be joining us, here is the most current list of attendees:

Bonk and Mrs. Bonk
BuddyRoadhouse and Mrs. Roadhouse
Nagle and Wawamama
ChiBears15
ChiTownDiner
Joerogo
Big G
Davidsanders
Buffetbuster and Mariton
chickenplucker and Linda
Schlotz
RalphMelton & Icecreamchick
CNW
irisarbor and chauffeur
will_work_4_bbq

For a total of 22 Roadfooders.  Fortunately, Paul and Roz weren't planning to join us until Friday, so our Thursday lunch reservations at Husk should be unaffected.

Congratulations to Roz on her promotion.  Sorry we won't see you on this trip.

Buddy

P.S. Many thanks to Ralph Melton for setting up the GroupMe.  Once again, I urge everyone to sign up if you haven't already.  It's a great way to stay current with any last minute changes in the Crawl.

Wow, great minds think alike, as my initial thought was Biscuit Love would be better on Thursday since we have two signature food destinations after that on Friday.

Pancake Pantry – Breakfast food
1796 21st Ave. S, Nashville

A couple of notes on this part of your itinerary:

Provence closed suddenly back in February with the exception of the outpost in the airport. I would recommend that you simply excise it from your list and go directly to Pancake Pantry after you leave Fox's, especially since that makes it much more likely that you will not have to wait in line to get in. Once you do get in I highly recommend that you include an order of hash browns, as they have the best I have ever had.

I think we should go to Provence and bang on the doors, demanding they reopen. Don’t they know who they’re dealing with? Seriously, it’s too bad. I had looked at their website and it looked really good.

Email from Mrs. Bonk's relative, who is attending Belmont U.

This looks like a great list!! I’m gonna give you some tips from a local.

I will warn you that the Nashville Rock-n-Roll marathon (Mel has run this twice!) will run on Saturday morning so there will be some road closures & detours around where you’re wanting to go that won’t be on your GPS. Plan for extra time navigating downtown/music row/ Belmont area.

Proper bagel is right next to Belmont campus so if you and your friends want a tour, it only takes 15-20 minutes to walk around the whole university & after 4 years I know a LOT about it.

Places you should try to get to early to avoid lines at peak times:
-Pancake pantry (I can’t stress this enough. Seriously, I’ve seen the line around the corner & down the block in a snowstorm. Even if you just send a few people to get there early & wait in line for the rest of you, it'll be better than waiting for an hour),
-5 daughters bakery,
-biscuit love,
-loveless & puckets if you don’t have a reservation (I looked at having my wedding at loveless-we put our name in & toured the grounds while we waited & still had to wait after a 45-minute tour),
-Hattie B's (you may be ok because it’ll be 8pm but it’s still a Friday in Nashville so you never know),
-proper bagel-most crowded on Sundays, but I’ve seen some busy Saturdays too. Don’t get coffee there, go 2 doors down to Bongo Java,
-Jen's ice cream-even though it’s late, I’ve seen the line out the door even when it’s cold outside)

If there’s anyone that wants to hear some live music but doesn’t want to do the whole broadway scene, Belcourt Taps on Belcourt Ave just off 21st Ave has writers rounds every night & a great beer selection. Demonbreun St. also has some restaurants that will have live music in the evenings.

Big-G:  Thanks for the kind words.  Roz and I will sincerely miss this event.  I started a business in Nashville and it is still there 42 years later.  Nashville is one of our favorite food cities.
Perhaps when you get back to Knoxville and I am here, sure would enjoy visiting again.

What time were you there?  All 22 of us were standing right next to that "No Engine Brake" sign for an hour this afternoon, waiting for you.  We finally left when the homeowner yelled at us to get off his lawn and threatened to call the cops.  We must have missed each other by minutes.

Oh well, Friday's another day.  The early morning people will be at Marcy Jo's Mealhouse & Bakery in Columbia, TN at 7am.  The rest of us are starting at Arnold's Country Kitchen at 10.

See you there!

Looks like I'm gettin' it, alright.

All worthy contenders, but after early discussions with other folks on the Crawl, I'd add Milwaukee to the list.
Also, I was serious about doing a Southern Illinois/Northern Kentucky BBQ Crawl.  The plethora of local Greasehouses and spectacular scenery will make for a memorable weekend.
