Threadgill's is wonderful. We went there on the Austin Roadtrip. In Austin Saltlick out in the countryside is also worth going. As far as San Antonio goes, a trip to Timbo's downtown is a nostalgic trip back to the days of the famous Hipp's Bubble Room. They still have many of Hipps menu items. If you remember the old great Manhattan Cafe in downtown San Antonio owned by the wonderful Greek Dan Anthony, his family is still in the restaurant business with the Sea Island Shrimp House. Also, continuing the tradition of the Frontier Drive In, Jim's Restaurants continue to serve the Frontier Burger and the most fabulous onion rings you will ever eat (if you like the skinny stringy ones). One other restaurant: Mary Ann's Pig Stand is kitschy and continues the tradition of the old Pig Stands. We always got BBQ but the restaurant is much broader and offers a lot of diner food. San Antonio has great food - you just have to look. Also you can't beat most of the San Antonio Mexican restaurants for AUTHENTIC south Texas Tex Mex. Get the cheese enchiladas at the Blanco Cafe and EVERYTHING at Mi Tierra downtown.

Great San Antonio recommendations from maudsiek. A step back into time.
I've been to most and all are great!

Thanks, Guys. I've put Timbo's on my list of possible stops. It looks like a place we can get to pretty easily from where we're staying.
