The Cubs lost to the Rockies just minutes ago, so this Chicagoan says Go Brewers!  After all, if we can't be in the playoffs, at least our north suburban team will be there.

It wasn't supposed to end like this, but at least I can join leethebard and wanderingjew in rooting for the Red Sox in the Series.

Don't be too sad Brad. I think you would have been thrilled with a Wildcard on opening day. The Brewers are really overachievers. I hope 2019 is not a return to reality.

There's a decent chance that what we saw this year could be reality for the next few seasons.  Most of the position players are 30 and under and there are some good young arms in the rotation and the bullpen, so the future is promising.  And I'll even go out on a limb (not a MetroJim-sized limb but a limb nonetheless) and predict that the 2019 NL ROY will be Keston Hiura at 2B.

At the very least I should be able to sell my 2019 Opening Day tickets for a nice amount over face value.

And the Series we got, BoSox - LAD, will likely set records.  Too bad about the Brewers, but it was a more glorious end taking the Dodger's massive payroll to a Game 7 than to fall to the BoSox in 5.

As my eldest and his wife are big BoSox fans (and as they followed my advice to sign J.D.), I'lll be rooting for them.  I'm thinking (and betting) BoSox in 6.

Should be interesting tonight for all the marbles:  Kershaw v. Sale with both Kimbrel and Jansen out of bullets.

All hands on deck for the Dodgers while the Red Sox can play it a bit more safe.  My guess is that if the Dodgers need a closer tonight it might be Pedro Baez.

Well, it's all over at Chavez...

Congratulations to the BOSTON REDSOX for proving themselves beyond any doubt to be the best team in 2018.

And to journeyman Steve Pearce, who took a very long road to the WS MVP award!  I always like it when a relatively unknown player steps up when the stakes are high.

When will MLB do something about Machado's disregard for the safety of other ballplayers? Between the stomping on the feet of 1st basemen and striking the groins of middle infielders, he is out of control. In the old days he would have received a on-field beatdowns until he stopped. Today it doesn't even get him a suspension.

Since he's a free agent perhaps the Cincinnati Bengals will give him a look.

Yes.  The Bengals drafted him out of UCLA.

And he played for Cotuit in the Cape League 2004.

O.K., now that the 2018 season is settled it's time to analyze where Harper and Machado will land.

  • Team that can't afford them due to market size:  Pirates, Brewers, Royals, Athletics, Marlins, Orioles, Padres, Reds, Diamondbacks, Rays, Indians, Tigers, Twins, White Sox.
  • Team that can't afford them due to prior, unfortunate signings: Angels, Mariners.
  • Teams that could afford them, but don't need them: NYY, BoSox, LAD.
  • Teams that could afford them but have too much sense:  Cards, Astros, Braves.
  • So that leaves the Phillies, Cubs, Mets, Rockies, Giants, Nats, Blue Jays, and Rangers.

I'm guessing that the Cubs outbid the Phillies, Giants, Mets, and Jays for Machado, them trade Addison Russell for pitching.

Harper is harder.  The Jays, Phils, Mets, and Rangers will outbid the Rockies and Giants.  I'm thinking either the Phillies or the Rangers - both of which are needy and have loads of cash.  Perhaps the edge will go to the Rangers who will be moving indoors in 2020 and, as they have the DH, can probably offer the 10 years Harper wants.
