One nice thing about "pulling" for four teams (Bucs, Rangers, O's, & Nats) is that there is most always something to be happy about.  Aside from Harper and Zimmerman returning to form, there is Joey Gallo playing excellent defense and hitting 10 HR already with a batting average above the "Mendoza line"!

And Gallo, along with Judge, is giving that big stiff out of Miami some competition for exit velocity and "tape measure" shots.

Is Aaron Judge for real?

Or just a flash in the pan?

The next Joe Charboneau?

Congratulations to two of my fellow Cavaliers - Ryan Zimmerman and Mark Reynolds - for (so far)having 'career years'.  Stay healthy and keep it up!

Re: Baseball 2017 2017/06/07 19:32:49 (permalink)
This and every other year I constantly make fun out of truly ill-considered, franchise endangering contracts like Greinke's and Pujols'.  But () I'm not always right.

I was horrified at one of 'my teams' signing a 32 year old Adrián Beltré for 4 and $63MM.  After all, Beltré had - after a truly spectacular age 25 season for the Dodgers - gotten 5 and $61MM from the Mariners for which he tendered in exchange an OPS+ of 101.

After that dog show he signed a one year deal with the (always-in-desperate-need-of-a-third-baseman) Red Sox for a huge pay cut.  Sure enough, he woke up and delivered an OPS+ of 141 and the Rangers stupidly backed up the Brinks truck.  Even though it wasn't my money, I was pi$$ed.

WAS I EVER FREAKING WRONG!

Sr. Beltré will enter Cooperstown as a Texas Ranger.

Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe the Stockholm Syndrome ... in any case I am glad to see a renaissance of The Bronx Bombers.

Yes, the "Jeter" teams were a mini-dynasty, but they were 'just' excellent teams that lacked a transcendent, awe-inspiring star like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, or Mantle.  But this new group led by Judge certainly has the potential for being something 'historic'.

So, good for NYC, good for MLB.  I'm not 'rooting' for them, but I sure am glad to see 'it' beginning to happen again ... those Damn Yankees!

It has the potential, with a little seasoning of becoming the stuff of legends, something the Yankees do well. As a Yankee fan for 7 decades I'm thrilled. Thanks for noticing!

It's hard not to notice a 6'7", 282#'er with an OPS of 1.160!

Add Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier, Aaron Hicks, & Greg Bird to that and the Yanks might "have something".  Trading Miller and 'renting' Chapman was genius, considering the 'haul' they got in exchange.

Let's not get too crazy.
It helps to have a virtually unlimited budget.

That said, the appropriately named Mr. Cashman had maneuvered to hold the "finishing touches" for last year's WS participants and got a Mother Lode for them.  Then, he resigned Chapman!

Could be, but no relation to me!

My 4 kids grew up in Northern Virginia as Pirates fans, but strayed.

My eldest and his wife have lived & worked in Cambridge for 20 years and (understandably) long ago joined BoSox Nation.  My younger three all still live near WDC and are, of course, Nats fans, as are my two grandsons, Max and Victor.

With the Bucs and Rangers dawdling below .500, I'm hoping for a BoSox-Nats WS!

Consider this, Babe Ruth in 1926:

and this, Willie Mays in 1954"

and, The Great One in 1968:

I could go on and show Williams, DiMaggio, Feller, Koufax, Cal, Jr., etc., but I think the three above will illustrate my point.

Which is that modern baseball players over-train to the point where their musculature overwhelms their ligaments and cartilage, leading to such foolish (and downright comic) injuries as "pulling an oblique" by simply swinging a baseball bat.

"Google" Mike Trout or Bryce Harper "weight-lifting".  It's just a matter of time before the greatest baseball talents of this generation "pop" something horribly.  Sad.

You want to see a great athlete who has his training honed to succeeding his sport?
Here you go:

You want to see a guy systematically pissing away the greatest talent his sport has ever seen by over-training?  Here you go:

When it comes to 'strong', there is nothing like 'farmer strong'.

In combat or sport, nothing else comes close.

Here is a gentleman who never hit more than 10 HR in a season:

John McGraw said that he was the best ever - and he saw them all, Anson & Keeler through Gehrig & DiMaggio.

Tonight is the 'Home Run Derby' with Judge, Sano, and Stanton (average among them 6'6", 260).  I'd take the gentleman above in both the Derby and a fight.

Yes, he is quite remarkable especially in that he has excellent athletic skills to go along with his size.  That is something one really can't say about his predecessors in the "giant" category like Frank Howard or Adam Dunn.

And kudos to whomever "coached him up" by shortening his swing and advised him to hit to all fields.  Good Lord, even many of his mistakes and mi****s land in the right-field stands!

This probably will be the BoSox year, but wait until the Yankees sign Vargas and Darvish in the off-season.  Yikes!

Jeez-in-crimeny!

I suppose a Cheesehead would have gotten the ghost of Willie Stargell to sign the ball, left the park, and hand delivered it to the cancer ward of Children's Hospital.

BTW: "Yinzer jagoff" is a term of endearment in 'da Burgh.

P.S., The Brewers are certainly having a fortunate season.  Enjoy it ... while you can.

Actually, since the ball was hit by a Cardinal it'd have to be autographed by the ghost of Stan Musial.
