Baseball 2017 - The Official Thread

It's only a little over 2 months until pitchers and catchers report to training camps, so now that the 2016 winter meetings are over are you looking forward to next season?

As a White Sox fan the trades of Chris Sale and Adam Eaton this week have left me a little shocked but hopefully the young players they received in return (including Yoan Moncada, widely considered to be the #1 overall prospect) will help create a playoff contender over the next couple of seasons, and it's quite possible the team isn't yet done dealing.  It looks like Mrs. C and I picked a good year for our first spring training trip!

IMHO, the ChiSox pulled off what could well be two of the best trades in MLB history.

History shows that trading for a pitcher is always a dicey move, especially if you have to give up a quality position player for him, cases in point: Ernie Broglio for Lou Brock and Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson.  In addition to the #1 position prospect - already up for his cup 'o coffee in the Show, the ChiSox got two GREAT pitching prospects and a very decent young outfielder.  Years from now this trade will be mentioned in the same breath as the ones I cited above.

Then, the ChiSox cashed in their SABRE-metric darling for a Mother Lode of pitching.  Nothing against the estimable Mr. Eaton.  When his career is done he will be mentioned in the same breath as another SABRE-metric darling, the estimable Shin-Soo Choo (except with a lower OBP and less 'pop').

    So, congrats to the ChiSox!

Oh, and BTW ... you should edit the title of the thread to:

    Baseball 2017:  THE OFFICIAL THREAD

You "beat me to it" fair and square; I was waiting for the explosive McCutchen trade which never went down.

I love Cutch, but the "moment" was there and the Bucco ownership blew it.

    Paging Mr. Cuban ...

    Done.

And yes, I was wondering a little bit why you hadn't started it up yet.

One mlb.com story I read this morning has the Dodgers as the most likely place for McCutchen to wind up, and if they don't re-sign Justin Turner there's speculation that Todd Frazier could go to LA as well.

I'm sure Turner's agent is wanting Donaldson money - WAY too many $$$ and years - for a 32 y.o. who lucked into a career year.

Whatever, just as long as the Bucs don't get stuck with Puig.

When did it get so expensive to see a spring training game?!?!?

For years I've been under the impression that spring games were really affordable (pricing along the lines of a Class A game, for example) but when Mrs. C and I went to buy tickets online earlier this morning we suffered some serious sticker shock: with the extra fees added in it's going to cost us $46 to see the Brewers and $62 to see the White Sox!  Granted, we did opt for shaded seats instead of the $8 lawn tickets out in the Arizona sun, which even in mid-March could spell trouble for us pasty Northerners.  Maybe free SPF 70 sunscreen is included in those prices.

Is that per person or total?

You could avoid the fees and buy them when you get there. Shouldn't be an issue getting seats except for weekends and when the Cubs are playing.

True, but we had discount offers to use by the end of the day Sunday.  The amounts are the totals for 2 persons.

I waited and waited, but neither the Rangers or Bucs put anything under my Christmas tree.

My tree finally dried out so I drug it out this morning.

Again, how I wish Mark Cuban (or someone with a few $B in the bank) would buy the Buccos.

Congratulations to the Orioles for lucking into a buyers market for RH power and getting Trumbo for 3/$37.5.

What I can't figure though is why the Rockies didn't grab him.  That would have let them use Desmond as a "Zobrist-style" super-utility instead of wasting him and $70MM at first base.

Good thing I'm not a Rockies fan.

And who knows what the Rangers are up to; they haven't even signed Napoli yet.

Now that the 2016 - 2017 free agent signing season is over it is time to announce the "winner" of my

    2017 Bitter Remorse Award
    a.k.a.
The "What the HELL Were We Thinking" Award

    Among past winners were:
    •  The New York Mets who will continue to pay Bobby Bonilla (who last played for them in 1999) $1.2 MM/year through his age 72 season in 2035.
    •  The Los Angeles Angels who owe their 37 year-old plantar-fasciitis sufferer an additional $140 MM for trying to play 5 more years + an additional $1000 MM for 'personal services' through age 52.  The stupendous stupidity of this contract won the Award for its first four years of existence, 2012 - 2015.
Then, shockingly, the 2016 Award was seized by ...
    • The Arizona Diamondbacks who breathlessly grabbed the sh*tty end of the stick by purchasing 6 years of the (then) 32 year old Zack Greinke's natural decline for $206 MM, on which they still owe $172 MM to find out how much further baseballs fly in Chase Field than they did in the heavy air and distant fences of Chavez Ravine. At this point the D-Back's only hope would be for the Dodgers to assume his contract for 30 cents on the dollar.
In the meantime, upon experience and review ...
we have a new winner for the 2017 Award!
    •  The Miami Marlins who, just recovering from the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez now realize that they owe that fragile stiff who sometimes is able to play a barely average RF an additional $299 MM.  Worse, the contract is so back-loaded into Stanton's natural decline that not even the Yankees would - or could - buy a even a piece of it.  All this cash for a lifetime .266 hitter whose best full-season WAR is reached every year by the All-Star break by the lesser paid Mike Trout!  OUCHIE!
Even the Yankees now know that you can't win a championship with a bunch of long-in-the-tooth $20 MM/year stiffs.  As a result, no truly stupid long-term contracts were offered in this off-season.  So, the Angels, D-Backs, and Marlins will have to stew in relative isolation and roam about the cellars of their divisions.

Is the white guy who constantly heckled to road team still allowed in MSG?

Don't faint, but I like the Yanks and hope Bird, Judge, Austin, & Sanchez are "for real".

Now that he's slimmed down and sobered up, C.C. will have his best season in years.

And signing Carter for tip money was a genius move that the Rays should have made.

Let the kids develop; in 2019 Bryce Harper will be in RF and Manny Machado will be @ 3rd.

Who was it that won the last World Series in a year ending in 9?

Evidently, Jeffrey Loria now realizes how stupid Stanton's contract is.  It will hamstring their payroll for a decade.

If the Marlins are worth $1.6 B, the two billionaires that bought the Rangers a few years back for a lousy 600 million got quite the bargain.

    ^^^Very amusing ^^^

But, where was The Natural on that list?  It was an inspiring tale of redemption with one of the best casts ever assembled.  And music from its score still plays in most ballparks.

But, I agree with them: the best thing about the Brewers is Bob Ueker, who probably has more cash in the bank than all the players combined.

Am I not paying proper respect to the Yankees and the Mets?

The Mets have yet to figure ways to catch the ball and to keep their pitchers out of operating rooms.  At best, a distant second behind the Nats in the weakest division in MLB.

The Yanks are two years, Machado, and Harper away.  This year:  at best, third, in a strong division.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a deliberate omission because after it hadn't shown up in the first 9 I was certainly expecting it to be #1.  I don't think anybody would really claim that a baseball movie with David Spade and Rob Schneider is actually better than The Natural...except for maybe David Spade and Rob Schneider.

BTW, keep your eye on Josh "Garth" Hader.  He's a lefty with some really good stuff who's making his way up the ladder.
