For great inexpensive wines, I usually go Italian...I've had some outstanding DOCG Chiantis for under $15. I've even spotted Chianti Classicos (though not Reservas) at that price. In addition to Chianti, the wines designated "Geografica Tipica" (in effect, local table wine) are usually delicious and very reasonable...under $10 in CT. That designation encompasses excellent, full-bodied reds and crisp pinot grigio whites too.

It matches well with Goverment Cheese, Ramen Noodles, Generic Hot Dogs, Spaghetti Os, and Popcorn. Try it today its called Strawberry Hill...Russ

I'm currently drinking Big Tattoo White, a Riesling from Germany. It cost about $9, and it went very well with my chicken salad and quiche dinner.

Same with the McWilliams Cabernet and merlot. Both are excellent and retail at $8.99.

From Chile try Santa Rita 120 Cabernet Sauvignon or the Santa Rita Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon.

$2.99/bottle. Lost Vineyards, Shiraz/Cab Sauvignon blend, Argentina. Opened the bottle a few evenings ago and took a sip an hour or so before dinner - raw, thin, insipid. Left the bottle open for an hour and poured some for dinner - it was still thin, characterless, but drinkable. We'll save the other bottles we bought for cooking or maybe Sangria this summer.

Cheers, John

RE: Best Bottle of Wine under $10.00 2019/11/05 18:48:03 (permalink)
With over supply in the wine biz, especially at the lower end, we should be seeing some deals out of the 2019 crush. There is a floor though........some good grapes a not being picked this year, as contracts expire, and can not be replaced. If you had a block of nice grapes, would you pick them, if you could not recover picking costs?

Unlike apples, corn or soybeans, growers can't put their grapes into long term storage to await better prices, although some are starting to make their own wine, and THAT can be put into storage. A local company, one town over, specializes in higher quality/lower cost wine (or so they say) under their own label. They claim to get "special deals" that they pass on. They seem to like the 9.99 price point for 750ml, but I've seen them put stuff on sale at 2 for 12.

Look at some of the names earlier in this thread. I miss their comments......

Because of the bad weather this year I can't imagine any growers here having too many grapes.  Then again, I suspect most of them are also vintners and their grapes are mostly used in house.

For the most part, California's think they can demand any price for their grape juice. They are wrong! With the exception of a couple of big names, a lot of "high end" Cali wine ends up as packer label. Just do a little research on Fred Franzia, aka Bronco Winery, aka Two Buck Chuck. A lot of the low priced wine on the market is actually glut from premium producers.

WTS, with the exception of The Peoples Republic of Pennsylvania(State Stores), you should be able to purchase a good bottle of wine for between $5 & $6.

tmiles, you are lucky to have very good, tax free wine stores in your State. Excellent pricing and selection, plus, a Trader Joe's.

You'd love the wine here Joe. My favorite wine & spirits shop sends me deals several times a week. This one is typical.

Tarima 2015

"Another terrific value is the 2015 Tarima...This wine has terrific aromatics, broad, expansive flavors, about 15% natural alcohol and an expansive, heady mouthfeel. This is rich, dense and Provençal in its flavor components. Totally aged in used oak and stainless steel, the wine is a real sleeper and big-time winner in the values sweepstakes. Drink it over the next several years...This is one of the top value wineries in all of Spain, working from generic appellations such as La Mancha to Jumilla and Alicante. They produce an amazing amount of inexpensive, high-quality wine that sells for a song."

The spectacular value known simply as Tarima is back and better than ever! This insanely delicious value has an almost purple hue, exhibiting a plethora of blue fruits, red berries and spice. Full throttle and fruit-forward, this Monastrell based effort is rich and luscious right this very evening, yet being from the uber-fresh 2015 vintage, it will continue to be phenomenal for at least another two years!

Snagging our biggest allocation ever, we're releasing this 91 Point rated "big-time winner in the values sweepstakes" for our LOWEST PRICE IN YEARS, for ONLY $7.99 per bottle, or $89.99 per case of 12. Yes, that is correct: 91 Points Wine Advocate, coming from "one of the top value wineries in all of Spain", for under $8 per bottle
I could use your help in culling my wine cellar.

Sounds like an activity for Smoke Day 2020.  Just get a couple of these and start emptying bottles into them, and set them on the table with a stack of red Solo cups.

Our everyday house wines are reds (red blends Redvolution or Night Hawk Black), whites (sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio) & a dry rose from Bota Box. They come in 3L boxes with a tap & will keep for weeks. They sell in our area for $18, which translates to $4.50 for the traditional 750ml.

Try one of the Winking Owl brand 2.95 wines at Aldie's. The Moscato may surprise you. Also the German Landshut Riesling at 5.99 is not bad.
