Best College Town Pizza Shops

Another "List".......50 Best College Town Pizza places. http://www.greatvaluecolleges.net/50-great-college-town-pizza-shops/
As a Va. Tech grad, I'm pleased to see the shop in Blacksburg at number 1! , but I graduated long before it opened. Have to give it a try next time I'm in town.

I'm a bit surprised that Frank Pepe's was only ranked #10, given that they're usually in the top 3 nationally.  ... Also surprised to see that Sally's is not on the list at all.  Ledo's in College Park, MD also made the list.  It's a local DC area chain that serves a gummy-textured crust. (Tried it twice. ... Two wasted meals of my life that I'll never get back.).   Yeah, the pizza is generally horrible in the DC area, and their pizza standards here are very low.

Unsurprisingly, my alma mater's city (Iowa City) didn't make the list, so I'll list some of its pizza places here - all good in their own ways and worth a visit, I think.

    The Wedge
    Falbo Bros.
The Airliner (try their deep dish)
    A&A Pagliai's
    Pizza on Dubuque

There are others, but these are the only ones I can speak to from my college years (1998-2002).   A&A Pagliai's is probably the best overall, PoD is good for quick slices, Wedge has great specialty pies.  All of them are still around, and, from what I hear back home, still basically the same as they were when I left.

There's also a Gumby's in Iowa City, as in a lot of college towns, and they make what are still the best cheesesticks I've ever had, called Pokey Stix - fantastic with some ranch dressing (which was Ken's for a while, but I hear they've gone back to their own dressing).

Glad to see UW-Madison represented. However, there are so many great pizza places near Marquette and UW-Milwaukee its not even funny. And more affordable.

I saw some tasty looking pies, but the #1 looked like one of those silly Adam Richman "Man v. Food" eating challenges.  Ick.

    • Why 50?
    • What happened to flyover country?
    • Why multiple pizza joints at a single school?
    • What happened to Bianco, it's not far from ASU?
    • Why Ian's and Greenbush (there's better pizza in Madison)?

Sigh! Another English major creative writer with Internet search abilities coming up with a must meet deadline list with the aid of Yelp of all places. I am pretty familiar with pizza in the Twin Cities and how she came up with Mesa Pizza Dinkytown mystifies me. First, I had never heard of it and secondly, I am pretty sure it has never made any similar best of lists with all the local publications. But there it was a picture from Yelp and probably loaded with very food knowledgable college kid reviews. But I guess that is the point, best college town pizzas and make sure everyone is covered. Take it as an interesting list but not gospel in any way.

For reasons that are not entirely clear to me, Davydd, Mesa Pizza in Dinkytown IS very popular with University of Minnesota students.  That's the pizza my grad students always choose if we're ordering in pizza for a staff meeting. I've had it once -- just what they call an FMTB (Fresh mozzarella, Roma tomatoes and basil), and it was OK, but underwhelming.  The pizzas are large, though, so a relatively good value in that sense. Plus, the location is basically on campus. Propinquity counts a lot with students.

Yup.  That's the key.  College kids will almost always go for the value. ... Big pizzas for cheap prices.  I know I was guilty of some of that back in college.   To make up for the crappy pizzas, we were lucky enough to have Pierce's Pitt BBQ a short 5 or 6 miles from campus.  It was always great to do the very short "road trip" to Pierce's.

I was very surprised to see that Moose's Tooth (#15) in Anchorage is on the list!  It's not even close to the UAA (Univ. of Alaska Anchorage) campus!  I have been there many times and the crowd is definitely not comprised of college age kids.  BUT.......they absolutely, positively have the very BEST pizza in Anchorage.

Of course when talking pizza, Pepe's should always be included.......especially the clam pie!

    College kids can't afford Bianco's!
Besides, the original Spinato's in a warehouse building closer to ASU is better and cheeper!

I'd find this list more interesting if it was divided into halves: one for public universities and one for private.  I'm betting the "more for less" pizzas would be more prevalent on the former.

These self appointed "food bloggers", should all pack up their laptops and go back to doing whatever is was they were doing before they "got the call". Why were 3 star rated shops placed ahead of 4 or 4.5 rated? I never considered NYC and Washington DC to be considered "college towns". Just another worthless "hey look at me" list.

I understand the college connection and students are more interested in bulk and value but I have to believe it was a lazy person's Internet research list. Otherwise, how else could 2Amy's in Washington, DC make the list? That's a wood-fired Neapolitan pizza that is not bulk in size or ingredients and is not cheap.

I can't speak to most of the list as I think i've only been to two of the places, but I am thrilled to see Adriatico's mentioned for Ohio St.  It is one of my favorites.  I don't think the thin crust pizza is great but the deep dish is the best.  Big rectangular pizzas with huge peperoni that cover a whole slice.  The crust is very garlicky and flavorful as well.

Except, that's a pretty common way for local pizzerias to cut their wares.

I lived in Richwood, OH for a while (worked in Dublin), and I don't recall having any good pizza. The local place in Richwood was just strange. Nice enough folks, but the pizza was as if someone saw a picture of a pizza, didn't know what it was or what it was made of, and tried to duplicate it. But cut it into squares instead of slices.

I love it when decades-old local favorites also happen to be the most popular places for students to get pizza, though of course that isn't always the case.  Most of the pizza joints in Iowa City are guaranteed some student patronage just because of their proximity to the dorms and the Ped Mall area.  I think the Airliner is the oldest, from 1944, though it's as much a bar as a pizzeria.
