Best sandwiches in South Florida

After you've had a monster sub at La Spada's in Lauderdale by the Sea, you have to try the "Key West" Pastrami sandwich at the Whale's Rib in Deerfield beach FL. Does anybody have any other suggestions

I've been reading this board for over a year. Love it. I travel constantly for my job. I always search here for places to eat on the road. You guys rock.

To the topic at hand. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale. When I saw the subject of the post I figured I'd have to weigh in. And then I saw La Spadas. Whee! The best hoagies I've ever had. One of my favorite foods, sandwiches. These are what I compare everything else against. The LBS store should definitely be considered roadfood. Get your hoagie, then head down A1A past the pier to the public beach that is across the street from the cop shop. There's a fine seawall to sit and eat on.

For the natives, Big Daddy (Joe passed away this year, God rest) turned my Mom on to these hoagies while playing tennis at what used to be Sea Ranch Lakes Beach and Tennis Club.

I will try to think of some other good sandwiches from back home, but this was such a high-water mark. I also know some great BBQ and Italian if you care.

Again, I want to thank all of you for the great pointers.

When my ex and I were dating, we went to a place in Miami (or Miami Beach) called Pumpernicks that had really great sandwiches. Anyone know if they are still around? That would have been in 1975.

After being to arguably the best sub places from the Keys to Vero Beach, I found the absolute best sub to be in Jupiter at a place called The Connection on Center Street. Anyone else know this place?

Pumpernicks was just north of Dade county. Unfortuanately it is gone and has been for a few years. Classic New York type place that catered to the large Jewish population.

What fun it was. You knew you were in their territory.

I ate at Primanti Brothers too (in Ft. Lauderdale), was surprised to see that the fries and cole slaw was stacked in the bun with the burger. And I ate it, even though I didn't think I could open up wide enough!

Must have missed La Spada's while in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. We always go to a dinky little diner in LBS and last year we were shocked to see that it was under new ownership. (Well the owner was getting up there in years, we knew it'd just be a matter of time). So now Louies Diner off Commercial about a block from the pier, is a Greedk Diner. I can recommend their Greek Salad, it's huge.

Primanti Brothers (A1A,,,) love it !!!! Great sandwich with the fries & coleslaw, pretty good pizza too.

Pumpernick's 3353 Sheridan Street : I think they are gone,,,,

There is a little deli just east at 2438 Sheridan St " Queens Big Corned Beef Deli" makes some great (of course) homemade corned beef sandwiches.

I lived there for a few years (butterfly ballot and all) and went in search of the best blackened dolphin sandwich. Bostons in Delray has a great one, and they are right on the beach.

Thank you, thank you! I lived in PGH for 30 yrs and yeah, Primanti's was great at 3:00am after a night out(and you're 20). But how there continues to be some mystique about these sandwiches is beyond me! You like soggy fries, soggy bread, average quality meats in a plastic basket? Knock yourself out

Aurelio's for pizza is absolutely the best in Naples. Also if you get up toward Bonita Springs (10 mins N of Naples) be sure to try the Dixie Moon Cafe on old 41. Southern food w/ attitude-chef owned. Also check the Friday Showcase section of the Naples Daily News (you can also get there on line) Has very good capsule dining reviews of recently-rated restaurants in Naples and Bonita.
