Big Apple BBQ Block Party and BillyBoy!
Got there a little after 11am. and got in line for Big Bob Gibson's Pulled Pork Sandwich and Coleslaw,it was the hit of the show! great sauce and even some burnt ends. The thing is each stall only makes one item w/ one small side, would have loved to try his Ribs.
I had called Billy and after a little phone tag Me and my Wife Robin hooked up w/ him. He's a great guy! He was eating some Smoked Sausage w/ pimento and Satines from Jim and Nicks. Had a nice talk w/ him about NYC Roadfood and he took a pic of us. We left him and went to get some Ribs.
Tried the Ribs from Rack and Soul, but I wasn't too impressed. It was the only place giving away a taste (a rib) and had a short line. Long Line = Good, Short Line = not so good. Beans were decent.
A real find was The Salt Lick BBQ. Excellent Sausage and Brisket, and white bread w/ coleslaw. The Sauce was pretty good too. A very long line for this one and well worth it.
Last Stall we tried was 17th. St. Bar and Grill. Best Ribs imho. and great beans. The Ribs had a lot of flavor and had some of the "burnt" skin I love. A very good vib at this place too. "Peace,Love and BBQ." is thier motto.
Snapple is the Sponser for the event so you ain't going to get any "Sweet Tea" at this Festival, pal, A fact I told to the very nice lady at Big Bob's who served us. That would have hit the spot. I didn't try any of the local spots I've been to (Dinosaur,Blue Smoke,Hill Country) but we had a great time. It got totally packed by 1PM. but one nice touch was that they put out picnic tables on Madison Ave. Sidewalk. Hey Billy! Great to meet ya and hope you enjoyed the rest of the Party. See ya soon.
