The single best taco I ate in all of 2016 came from a tiny, goat cafe in Lexington Kentucky: Birrieria Jalisco.

I missed the original post.  I wasn't even lurking back then.  Sorry to hear they're gone.

We lost our best birrieria a couple of years ago when the land was taken for a new Aldi.  I kept hoping he would pop up somewhere in the neighborhood but have never found him.  It was nose to tail cookery.  you could have tacos or consomme, which might include an eyeball, lips - hah! I don't remember what all and many of the pieces were unidentifiable.

There is still Gerardo's up on the north side making borrego on the weekends I guess, with both lamb and goat included.  Robb Walsh did a big report on that years back.  I haven't been up there in a few years.  Maybe I'll head up when I start looking for tamales.

Many tortillerias offer Birria on the weekends but I've never found any that come anywhere close  to Trudis.

Man I need to get back to Houston. It's one of the greatest eating cities in the U.S. I cried when Birrieria Jalisco shut down up in Lexington. Those Mexicans really knew how to cook.

I believe I've only had goat once in my life and I didn't know it at the time. It was at a math department barbeque. I was about 12 and didn't recognize the flavor of the meat. My mother lied and told me it was veal in order to make sure I ate it. It worked because I knew, vaguely, that veal was a type of beef. I was over forty when my mother confessed. I was so annoyed that she had tricked me. I'd like to have another chance to try it to see if I like it or not. What does it taste like? At all similar to beef, pork, or lamb?

The best goat tastes like pot roast. You should drive out to Brady over Labor Day weekend for their goat cook off. Over 200 teams will be competing. You can try dozens of different style barbecue goats during the festival.
