It is a really long and complicated story but one of the main components is that Allison Marcel Montana known as “Tootie” who was the Chief of Chiefs of the Yellow Pocahontas Hunters died while speaking to the New Orleans city council on injustices suffered by the Indians at the hands of police.
Montana was the great nephew of legendary Big Chief Becate Batiste, the 1st black Native American to mask with the Indians.
Books have been written on these men. Yes, Super Sunday is a riotous party filled with food and drink but it's also partially sombre as many of the celebrants are also memorializing the Indians who came before them.
If you ever have the chance, Super Sunday is one of the best gatherings the city throws all year long and I highly recommend you come out for a full day of celebrating, laughing, and remembering the Indians who built the foundation for the modern tribes.
