Blue Island IL

Hi everyone -

I have a business run to Blue Island which is a south suburb of Chicago.  I'll have a bit of extra time for a quick meal and as I have never been to the area, I am looking for suggestions.

Can be sit down or fast casual, outdoor stands are fine, looking for something indigenous or unique to the area or just plain good.  Even a great local hot dog stand or a mother-in-law would be good.  My time frame is 11am - 1pm otherwise I would have gone to The Maple Tree Inn!

It is an area I never travel through which explains my lack of knowledge.

Thanks for any suggestions or recommendations!

The Dis & Dat Platter is calling out your name! Although, the hickory buttered BBQ shrimps have my name on them! Check this out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMdkdFHzZG8

Maple Tree Inn has been on my "must try" list for far too long.  Been reading about it for ages and keep meaning to get down there, but it just never seems to happen.  The menu looks fantastic, but you'd better bring a few friends to help out.  There's way too much good stuff to try, even for the ChiTownDiner.

Some quick research also shows Mario's Tacos as a promising possibility.  And Iversen's Bakery should scratch your pastry itch nicely.  I'd be wary of a place called Hog Wild in nearby Midlothian.  They bill themselves as a BBQ joint, but I don't think there's any actual smoking going on there.  Customers love it for huge quantities, but I don't know if the flavor is there.

Thanks for the tips so far!  Appreciated!  The Maple Tree Inn as noted is not open during my sojourn.  Also, Buddy, I noticed all of those and they had no real appeal.

Thinking Vito & Nick's or more likely Top Notch...that's about the max detour as there is a tight time schedule on this one.

Gonna keep looking and hoping for something new!

I said to myself....let me see where Gregg is going, so I Googled Blue Island.  My Googler must be broke, I think it directed me to Mexico City!?  I have never seen such a concentration of Mexican restaurants......no even in Mexico! So, in my learned opinion.......eat Mexican! I here they have good smoothies!

Joe, that was my thinking in recommending Mario's Tacos.  Blue Island does have a fairly high concentration of Hispanics, therefore the Mexican restaurants, and the like, will tend to be pretty good because the locals won't put up with anything sub par.  Looking at the internet photos and other information, Mario's seems to be a notch above the typical Taqueria, which in my mind makes it a solid choice.

But if the Big Guy wants Pizza and Burgers, whaddaya gonna do?

Did the Maple Tree Inn used to be Helen's Olde Lantern? I remember that from my college days. Terrific roast duck and fresh fish!

rumaki, there's a murky history to the location that I hope I'm getting right after reading a couple of articles.  If not, I'm sure someone here will correct me in the most unceremonious way possible.

Maple Tree Inn opened in 1975 serving the standard south suburban fare of Burgers and Shakes.  The owner, Charlie Orr saw a Cajun/Creole cooking show in 1981 on the local PBS station and was inspired to change the entire concept of his restaurant.  It was an instant success.

All this time Helen's Olde Lantern (BTW, Helen's had its own colorful history as a legendary restaurant and saloon whose roots trace back to Prohibition) was chugging along with their own business in the same neighborhood.  Until 1991.  That's when the owner decided to sell and Charlie Orr bought the property.  Here's where the plot thickens.

Orr opened up The Lion's Head Inn in the Helen's space, serving up New England and Portuguese fare.  They operated there for three years, but apparently didn't enjoy the same success as Maple Tree Inn.  So Charlie moved that restaurant into the space formerly occupied by Lion's Head/Helen's Olde Lantern.

So yes, the shorter answer is, Maple Tree Inn is located in the old Helen's Olde Lantern building.

This is my problem in life, I always take the long way to get anywhere.  Hope it was worth it.

CTD...you’ll be pretty close to Beverly/Mt Greenwood, so I can highly recommend Bacon & Jam on 111th between Kedzie and Pulaski. I am a big fan of Top Notch, but they have my new favorite burger in the neighborhood. Also, my fav soup is cream of chicken with rice and it’s so popular they have it every day. Also, Joey’s Red Hots has recently opened a spot on 115th and Western and has had lines out the door, so they’re doing something right. Personally I’d go for soup and the burger at B&J.

Irish - Good stuff, thanks...at least now I have some options...probably end up polling the work crew - hot dogs, burgers & breakfast & bacon, Mexican, bakery, pizza, burger or multiple stops...

Thanks everyone....I'll let you know what we find!
