Boycotting Pepe's?

The last thing I want to do on here is start any political fighting. But I just heard about this and really think it's absurd.

People are apparently boycotting Pepe's Pizza in New Haven (and elsewhere) because the owner had a post or two out that showed he supports Trump.

Do we really want to get to the point where we only go to businesses owned by people we agree with?

That's a very good idea.

I took a trip to Europe 2-3 weeks after 9/11. There were so many warnings about security delays. We were told to get to the airport four hours early.

It turned out that so many people were scared out of traveling that the airport was like a ghost town. We were at our gate within ten minutes of entering the door to the airport.

But we must boycott anything, anyone, any institution that does anything that might trigger us. No one who does not agree with us should be allowed to live, let alone make a living.

By the way, I'll have a small plain pie. Oh, and a birch beer, please.

There are places I boycott, but it's not usually due to politics. Normally it's because of consistently bad service or food. Folks all have their own politics and, as long as they aren't hateful and damaging, I am a live and let live kinda guy. I don't eat at Chick Fil A. But that's mostly due to the fact that I just don't really care for their chicken sandwiches and fries. Their sweet tea, however, is the bomb!

Pepe's is getting close to 100 years in business. I would bet they could care less that these idiots are boycotting their business.

The attention may even help their business. I read the comments beneath an article about this on the New Haven news site and a number of people said they'd make a point of going to Pepe's in reaction to this.

Some businesses, e.g., Ben & Jerry's, employ 'politics' as part of their marketing / corporate image.  Others, e.g., Benetton and Starbucks flavor their corporate identities with virtue signaling.  My analysis of such activities on their part is, for a considerable market segment, to make demand for their product less price elastic, enabling them to seek rent from higher prices.

I do not 'boycott' these enterprises, I simply take my business elsewhere.  And that has more to do with my refusal to pay economic rent than politics.  That said, as much fun as it is to sneer, I would never attempt either to lead or participate in a mob against them.  Frankly, such would be downright un-American - to say nothing of being a total waste of time and energy.

To my knowledge, Frank Pepe - in no way, manner, shape, or form - associated his business with his "politics".  Yet, here comes the mob.  Sad.  Sad.  Sad.

Oh, but you see Frank Pepe was reported to have been a staunch believer in the innocence of Sacco and Vanzetti.

If that's the case, then he is "boycott-proof".

Just to be sure though, he needs to state his belief that Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were framed by J. Edgar Hoover.

Well, Frank Pepe's been gone now for a long time. But I've heard that Hoover was so infatuated with Julius that he'd dress up like Ethel.

My first visit ever to Frank Pepe's was last week, in Warwick. I went twice in two days. My first pie was with fresh tomatoes and I think no mozzarella. I liked it a lot, but thought I should try one more traditional, with a tomato sauce and mozzarella. I liked that one much more. I'm glad I wasn't put in a position to have to decide if I was going to boycott it.
