Many years ago, there used to be a broodje shop in Washington, DC, on I Street, I think.  It was owned/run by an expat from the Netherlands.  My favorite was the crabmeat broodje.

I've eaten dozens of broodjes and I've never encountered crab meat as a filling, sounds real good.

What exactly is a broodje?  Is it defined by the bread?

Yes, broodje refers to the roll or bread, the fillings are vast and varied. If you're a sandwich lover you really need to try one. In the hands of a good deli man they're in the same league as a fine po boy, hero or grinder.

Thanks!  Later this week I'll be in the vicinity of the historically Dutch community of Pella, Iowa...perhaps I can track one down.

Sorry, no good luck to report.  I checked with the Pella C of C and couldn't get a lead on a broodje, and with time at a premium I wasn't able to wander around to see what might be out there.  I got the feeling that while Pella likes to play up the Dutch heritage in many ways the local dining scene might be lagging a bit.
