How awful. His pizza was unbelievable and the foodie world was a better place because of him.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family from Cathy and I.

I am truly sorry to hear of the passing of Burt.  Thanks to Buddy, Burt and others we were able to enjoy his wonderful unique pizza last year. It was a one-of-a-kind experience.

Condolences to his family and friends.

RIP, Burt. I had your first pizza as a high school lad ('63-'65) at the Inferno in Evanston, then at Gulliver's when I was in college('65-'68), and finally at Pequod's in Morton Grove in 1971, when I moved into my first home, in Niles, IL. There was no other pizza that could compare!

Two hours before I received notice on Burt's passing, Ralph Melton and I were having a discussion in Pittsburgh regarding Burt's and Jozsa's Corner and the need to visit these type of places soon.  Am so glad the Chicago food tour through the coordinated efforts of Buddy Roadhouse had a great Sunday Pizza-fest at Burt's in May of 2015.

We'll all miss Burt's quirky ways and fantastic pizza.  So sad but grateful for all he contributed to the world of food and pizza.

This is a man that I admired for the fact that he had a great product and ran his business his way. I think this is a great example of having your cake and eating it too. Burt got a lot of satisfaction just being successful at what he set out to do.

Didn't he just retire last fall due to a change in health?  Far too short a retirement, but then again, he never came off as the kind of guy wanting to retire.

Burt Katz was my employer, my friend, and a member of our extended family for 43 years.  Everyone in the Roadhouse family will miss him greatly.

Burt was the subject of dozens of pieces in print, radio, and television.  I just came across this piece tonight.  It was shot sometime after he decided not to reopen.  I think it may be the best representation of who he was.

NOTE: The segment showing a pizza being made was most likely shot at Pequod's Pizzeria, the establishment Burt founded in 1971 and sold in '86.  He was not making pizzas himself when this piece was recorded.

BTW - Burt's reopened under new ownership.  The new owners, with the family's blessing, have recreated his signature pizza.  It is on my short list to try again and will report back in when completed.  Substantail remodeling has occurred.

But only as a "museum piece", not in actual use.
