Burt’s Place: And so it ends, not with a bang, but a whimper…

Doug Sohn of Hot Doug's fame had the chance to do it right.  Still a young man, he made the announcement of his closing five months before his final day, giving devotees and hopeful first timers a chance to make one last pilgrimage to his highly esteemed Encased Meats Emporium.

Sadly, there will be no highly publicized run to the end for Burt’s Place.

Amid months of swirling rumors and speculation, I’ve maintained the position that until I heard otherwise from Burt’s own mouth, we would be reopening once he was physically able to do so.  I spoke with him today and addressed that point specifically.  He responded with the firm assertion that he would not reopen.

Some quick, general background for those who want to catch up:
Throughout late June and early July, Burt had been suffering from ever worsening back pains.  On Thursday, July 9th he made the decision to close down for a week so he could seek further medical attention and recuperate.

Just to show he hadn’t lost his unique sense of humor, we posted a sign in the window stating, “Closed due to unexpected equipment failure.”  Burt was the “equipment”.  We changed the sign a couple of weeks later to more accurately reflect the true medical nature of the situation.

To answer the big question hanging over the plate; Burt is fine and seems to be in good health.  He’s been seen repeatedly working out at the gym, and he and Sharon have been spotted dining out at various places around the area.

All I can tell you is, during the few months he’s been off, he gained some new perspective.  Although he’s physically able to keep on making Pizzas, he just feels it’s time to call it a career.

Yes, he’s planning to sell the place.  Whether that sale includes his recipes and technique will be handled between him and the buyer. Stay tuned.

Finally, if anyone knows of an Old School Restaurant in the Chicago area, looking for a wise-ass, yet dedicated waiter who excels at hand writing orders, please send me a PM.

Thanks to everyone for your patronage and support.

That's certainly sad news, an end of an icon,  however Burt and Sharon have earned a well deserved retirement, and I'm glad to hear that they're in good health.

I had the opportunity to enjoy Burt's both in 2008 and 2011 with you and CTD and will certainly enjoy the memories (of Burt's not you and CTD  )

I'll see you in a week and a half

My stomach is sad, but my heart is glad for Burt(on enjoying retirement).  He deserves a break today!

Buddy, I'm positive you will be receiving offers! A good wise-ass is very hard to come by these days.

That is sad. I finally found pizza in Chicago and now it's gone. Say, you don't have a whole lot going on, and you can hand write orders. Why don't you buy it?

Now I'm really fortunate to have stayed those extra hours for pizza back in May!

Even though he's closing I'm glad he's gotten his health back and will be able to enjoy his retirement.

Brad captured my thoughts exactly. I'm so glad we got one final chance to dine at Burt's.

When is the Kickstarter for "Buddy's Place" starting?

Very, very sorry to hear Burt's Place is closing.  I'm glad we got to eat his fantastic pizza in May.  I know how draining the restaurant biz can be.  You love it but it takes a toll on you and finally you say, "enough is enough".  I just hope Burt and Sharon are able to get out and do things they couldn't do while being restaurateurs.

Buddy,
Hate to tell you but dedicated, wise-ass waiters who hand-write orders are..........ahem.........obsolete.  Sorry.

Sorry to hear the loss of another great restaurant, but it is wonderful that Burt and Sharon are going to be able to enjoy their well deserved retirement.  And I'm grateful to Buddy for setting up the memorable luncheon back in May, so I could experience the place firsthand.

Jeff,

This has to be a shock to the Roadhouse family of eaters. You must've been with Burt for 40 years or so, and Abe_Froeman was probably born with an IHOP spoon in her mouth. [Wink emoji here]

I know you are devious enough to organize a proper send-off for Burt. It would be awesome to be a part of it. If Burt's recipes are not sold, maybe you can include them in your soon to be published book on Burt's Place.

I'd be happy to take the rear cover photo.  I'm thinking black & white, with Buddy wearing a corduroy jacket (elbow patches mandatory) and holding a pipe.

Speaking of Buddy's wardrobe, that pleather apron of his will likely be a non-starter for any server job he is seeking. On the other hand, if they are doing a Hannibal Lector remake...

Sadly, I missed my opportunity. Burt's Place was on my list, but my propensity to skirt way around Chicago after two accidents there kept many opportunities away.

If there is one last hurrah at Burts - realizing fully that the chances are slim none to none, but nonetheless - I will find a way to be there

I can't see asking Burt to make any pizzas.  I can, however, see asking Burt to supervise harshly while Buddy makes the pizzas.

I am so glad I got to try Burt's once.  And I'm so sad I only got to try Burt's pizza once. I never had pizza with such a delicious crust.  Thank you Buddy for setting up that wonderful lunch in May. I tried several different pizzas and also have that fantastic garlic bread!  I'm also glad that Burt is enjoying a well earned rest.

Whoa Nellie. This isn't something simple like Bar-B-Que sauce, this is Chicago pan pizza Sanders will be botching. Is it worth risking?

Like Jen and weren't disappointed enough at having to catch our flight before the gathering at Burt's back in May! Still lots of reasons to visit Chicago again, but can't tell you how much we were hoping to get to Burt's some day.

Buddy,
After visiting in May and witnessing the lengths you and CTD go to to show off your great city, hungry is not a worry for our next visit. We even saw the 'spreadsheet' up close. Never thought I would be hungry again after that visit. I got over it of course 😀
We certainly hope to take you up on that in the not too distant future.

Yep, they did one hell of a job. We wouldn't mind another trip to the Windy City, either. And while those other places serve casseroles, Burt's was apizza.

Thank you Michael.  I'm glad we were able to provide that experience to you and the rest of the Roadfood gang.

My favorite moment of that entire tour was at the end of the lunch at Burt's when you looked up at me and said, "This stuff rates up there with New Haven."

I can think of no greater compliment coming from such an outspoken authority.

I'm outspoken, sure. But an authority I am not. The entire weekend was wonderful and Burt's was a fitting topper. I think I told buffetbuster and chitowndiner at the time that it was equal to New Haven.
