Chi Town Diner's Prayers are answered- The best of 2016

First and foremost I want to thank those who have texted and pm'd me with words of encouragement, reminding me that there are still a few here on the forum who share my passion of what "Roadfood" is all about. I also want to thank Tony Bad who promised to keep a watchful eye for any "funny business" that may make an appearance on this thread.

And I would like to thank the Boston Roadfood crew, unfortunately they no longer post here on the forum, however we all get along wonderfully and it's always great to see them a handful of times a year.
Unfortunately we lost some dedicated Roadfooders in 2016 and I would like to dedicate my end of the year report to Mayor Al and Waltpiii

As usual I will start out my year end report with

Nice start with the Chicken Tasso Gumbo being one I wish to try especially since it found at the Hominy Grill!

Seafood is prevalent in the soup section...will the trend continue through the other categories?

After a second pass, the Blue Crab Bisque would also make my list!  What will we be enjoying after the soup course?

I believe there will be two places on that list but it won't be till the end.

Not particularly, only in the "pie" and "other desserts" category!

Really nice photos WJ!  I have been curious about what you had at Bug Café in Mid Pines. That cream of curry squash sounds wonderful.

Thank you for the recommendation. Both of of us were very impressed. This will not be the only the time that the Bug Café appears on  this thread.

WJ-
Wish I could take credit for finding such an excellent, unusual place, but it was in one of the Roadfood books.  Looking forward to future photos from the Bug!

I thought we would get to the part that buffetbuster has been waiting for....

Best Pies of 2016

1. Key Lime Pie at Saltwater Cowboys- St Augustine FL

IMG_8614 by ohso37, on Flickr

I've had Key Lime Pie at several different places throughout Florida and the pie served at Saltwater Cowboy's has always been one of my favorites

2. Chocolate Cream Pie at Diehls Restaurant- Nitro WV

IMG_9145 by ohso37, on Flickr

I've yet to be disappointed by dessert at Diehl's, in fact I've never been disappointed by anything served at Diehl's. The only thing that disappointed me was when the pie was served it was already cut in half as I informed them that Sandra and I would be sharing the slice. Hence the photo. This will not be the last time that Diehl's appears in this thread.

3. Cherry Pie at Faye's Northside Cafe- Tipton Indiana

IMG_9340 by ohso37, on Flickr

There's nothing fake in this pie. Incredibly tart- sweet. My only regret is that I had to share with Chi Town Diner and ChiBears15

4. Sugar Cream Pie at My Sugar Pie- Zionsville Indiana

IMG_9373 by ohso37, on Flickr

Not quite as sweet as other sugar cream pies, that's certainly a good thing as far as I'm concerned. We were all in agreement that this is some of the best sugar cream pie we've had.

5. Raisin Pie at Gray Brothers Cafeteria- Mooresville Indiana

IMG_9534 by ohso37, on Flickr

Although portion size has decreased at Gray Brothers, this decadently sweet raisin pie has held it's own throughout the years.

6. Peanut Butter Meringue Pie at The Whistle Stop- Glendale KY

2016-08-31_08-09-33 by ohso37, on Flickr

I never really gave much thought about Peanut Butter Meringue Pie, clearly that changed after my first experience at The Whistle Stop. This could most likely be my favorite pie served to me all year. This will not be the last time that the Whistle Stop makes an appearance on this thread.

7. Ollalieberry Pie at Duarte's Tavern- Pescadero CA

IMG_0074 by ohso37, on Flickr

Although we loved the atmosphere and the middle of no where feel of Duarte's Tavern (even though it's just 40 miles from San Francisco)  the meal itself was fine, however the star of the meal was this fine slice of pie. Ollalieberry? Best comparison would be blackberry

8. Maple Cream Pie at Rosie's Restaurant- Middlebury VT

IMG_0331 by ohso37, on Flickr

This unassuming family restaurant specializing in Yankee Cookery in Central VT serves a fine rendition of Maple Cream Pie. This time I told the waitress that even though we're splitting the slice, not to cut the pie in half.

Not a bad one in the bunch but the Sugar Cream was superb!  Enroute back to Chicago, I choose to forgo tornadoes and baseball and grabbed 4 more slices.  Two didn't make the state line!

I haven't thought much about next year's pie, however now you have me thinking about the Lemon Ice Box Pie at the Silver Skillet which has alluded me on my last two visits to Atlanta

Best Breakfasts
(In No Particular Order)

1. Hang Town Fry and Beignets at Just For You Cafe - San Francisco CA

IMG_0138 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_0140 by ohso37, on Flickr

Several folks pointed me in this direction for one of San Francisco's finest Hangtown Fry's. . Just For You Cafe is located in one of San Francisco's recently revitalized "hipster" neighborhoods. Eggs, Oysters and Bacon, sided with a homemade scone and and appetizer of homemade beignets.  A City By The Bay Treat.

2. Dim Sum at Dol Ho- San Francisco CA

IMG_0093 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_0092 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_0091 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_0087 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_0086 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_0082 by ohso37, on Flickr

The 9 years since I last visited was truly worth the wait. A perfect San Francisco Sunday Brunch, Dol Ho is the place that makes me find Dim Sum joints in Boston, disappointing. A true classic Dim Sum dive with carts and all, be prepared that no one speaks English.

3. Bagel and Lox with a Schmear at Ess-A-Bagel- New York, NY

2016-12-22_07-35-47 by ohso37, on Flickr

The definitive NYC Breakfast. Well, even with the total decline of the Jewish Deli, I'd still have to say yes. Totally worth the one hour wait standing "on line" as they'd say in NY.

4. Breakfast Strata at Enrico Biscotti- Pittsburgh PA

IMG_9210 by ohso37, on Flickr

This was my second visit to Enrico Biscotti in 4 years. This time for brunch during the Pittsburgh Spring weekend. Although there wasn't much left of my Strata after sharing, it was probably one of my favorite breakfasts I enjoyed all year.

5. Banana Walnut Pancakes and Corned Beef Hash at Pamela's P & G Diner- Milvale PA

Pamela's P & G Diner Milvale PA by ohso37, on Flickr

Pamela's Diner Milvale PA by ohso37, on Flickr

There's a good reason why Pamela's was my favorite breakfast spot when I lived in Pittsburgh. The Banana Walnut Pancakes, and I've learned to love 'em even more without syrup. One of my favorite breakfast spots in the country.

6. Country Ham Biscuit at Tudor Biscuit World- Charleston WV

IMG_9181 by ohso37, on Flickr

Warm fresh, leaden buttery biscuits, salty country ham with a fried egg and cheese - a dangerously addictive combination.

7. Shrimp and Grits at Charleston's Cafe - Mt. Pleasant SC

IMG_8956 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_8955 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_8957 by ohso37, on Flickr

Creamy shrimp and grits sided by a sweet potato biscuit. Sandra really enjoyed her Southern Benedict too which included fried green tomatoes.

8. Bacon Cheddar Cheese Grits Casserole at Hominy Grill- Charleston SC

2016-12-22_07-46-30 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_8809 by ohso37, on Flickr

It's for good reason that we visited Hominy Grill not once, not twice but three times during our visit to Charleston. Our breakfast visit was particularly special with this unique cheese grit casserole with bacon and topped with a fried egg. Their biscuits and home made jam made this a meal that Charleston should truly be proud of.

9. Seafood Omelet at  Barbara Jean's Restaurant Ponte Vedra Beach FL

IMG_8548 by ohso37, on Flickr

IMG_8547 by ohso37, on Flickr

Not only did we enjoy our breakfast while soaking up the sun during our St Augustine weekend, but watching the dolphins swim by was an extra treat.

10. Bacon, Boursin and Spinach Croissant at  Amelie's French Bakery and Cafe- Charlotte NC

Amelies 2 by ohso37, on Flickr

2016-12-22_07-44-54 by ohso37, on Flickr

A perennial favorite. Sandra enjoyed her quiche too.

That was one of our favorite meals in San Francisco.

I had to post prematurely without competing the list due to a snag.
