Chicago - Like a Bat Out Of Hell!

It was going to be a near perfect Spring weekend in Chicago as Roadfooders from throughout the Midwest converged on Chicago via planes, trains and automobiles…and one skateboarder from Stoughton, WI!  It was just the beginning of The Great Chicagostyle HotDog and Italian Beef Crawl and after a quick trip to Chicago’s Midway Airport, I picked up my 4-day car companion buffetbuster and as our CD pick for the weekend succinctly sang…we hit Chicago like a “Bat Out OF Hell!”

(Special thanks to Mr. M. Loaf for providing the perfect sun roof open, windows down, music and lyrics for our weekend.)

Wanting to beat lines that have become notorious, we made a beeline for the original location of Kuma’s Corner, the heavy metal, tattooed and pierce any body part burger joint that has made everyone’s best hamburger list….

The Roadfood gods were smiling as we got the 2nd parking spot at the door (there are usually none for 2 blocks) and as I walked in, buffetbuster had table #1 in perfect light for photos and away from the speakers which can get LOUD!  Within minutes of our arrival, a line had formed and as we exited, it was down the sidewalk!  We opened the weekend up with a near perfect order of battered and fried dill pickle slices...

It was a nice way to start our low-carb weekend!  Next up, two small plates to be shared by us....

We choose Andouille sausage, caramelized onions and sweet corn.  Topped with a dice of scallions, this was a superb "small plate" dish!

Even after eating all we could, we had 5 pounds to take home!

Buffetbuster had already done his research and had zeroed in on the Behemoth!  A monthly burger special and with it being April 30th, today was the last day for this snack size Behemoth!

As pictured above, a bed of fries was topped with a perfectly grilled 10 oz. burger.  Then the layering begins...kielbasa, cabbage, poutine (battered cheese curds), bacon, chives and few caramelized onions to round things into shape.  Cover with a generous portion of stout gravy and you have this masterpiece!  We did manage to join the clean plate club on this one.

We packed up our mac 'n cheese, threaded our way through the crowd, walked all 25 feet to our parking spot....and took off like a Bat Out of Hell for our next stop!

Sit back...we're just getting started!

N.B. - please join in with your comments, pictures and recollections!

The Roadfood gods were indeed smiling on us that day, as we landed at the one and only table (unless you are counting seats on their patio, which wasn't opened up for the season, yet) where you can get natural light for decent photos.  Although we did not fit in with the young, heavily tattooed and pierced crowd, our waitress took excellent care us.  When a couple of NFL linebacker sized guys like CTD and I have to share the behemoth, then you know it lived up to it's name.

I have been hearing about Kuma's Corner for years and was so happy that we made that the first stop.  The music is loud and in your face, but it certainly didn't spoil our good time.  During one particular song, which was nothing but piercing guitars and screaming, I asked CTD, "Hey, wasn't this your's and Patty's wedding song?

You've confused me with my younger daughter's boyfriend/future fiancée, who's apparently quite the thrasher.  However, I think he might have some Roadfood potential...

I'm not so sure about the cabbage but the rest of that Behemoth burger looks mighty good!  I hope Buffetbuster didn't try to flip it over so the fries were on top...

And that was just a warm up before dinner at U-Gazdy Polish Restaurant. They're amazing, folks. Amazing.

While those two were stuffing their faces, we had a conservative lunch of "chopped steak" and draft root beer at Triple XXX in West Lafayette, Indiana.

We did eat the entire burger at Kuma's Corner and almost all of the deep fried pickles, but there was plenty left of the mac and cheese.

Oh well, two out of three ain't bad!

You and Michael made a great choice of where to stop on the way to Chicago.  Triple XXX has really good burgers, but even better root beer!

We thought about bringing you both one but decided you should save room for the Polish food in the evening.  And the food on Friday.........and Saturday.......and Sunday.

XXX Root Beer!

I love it!  XXX is the finest, smoothest, commercially bottled root beer that I've ever found.  Unfortunately I rarely fine it but when I do I buy several bottles.  It's wonderful stuff!  I even have an empty bottle sitting on a shelf in my computer room for what reason I have no idea.

I don't have many pics, but, it was only a short walk from my almost freehotel room to Johnnie's.  Which happened to be my favorite Italian Beef of the trip.

I'm sorry i missed the polish Extravaganza, but, I did suffer through the evening at Burt's!

World class pizza!  The crust is light like Old Forge Style, just a little thicker.  Nothing is overdone on this pizza, it is perfectly balanced.

You know, Joe, you're jumping the gun.........the rest of us didn't go to Burt's until Sunday.  We still have to get through Thursday night's Polish extravaganza, all day Friday and Saturday before we get to Burt's on Sunday.  And I have 2 hum-dinger photos from Sunday!!

Chicago has a very large Polish population and several restaurants featuring Polish style food bear this out.  As mentioned above, this was our choice for an opening night meal - U-Gazdy Restaurant.   Buddy and I had done some stealth work the previous Saturday afternoon, so we were very familiar with the menu and had a little bit of an idea on what we would order.  It resembled the entire menu!

After the opening chance to meet everyone - both new and old - we sat family style at several long tables in this wooden/Northwoods/cabin-like structure.

Before...

During...

After...

This was a long and hearty meal that began with a fairly decent Red Borsch...

...and always pierogis!

Plates of pierogis were passed around that contained meat, sauerkraut & mushroom and potato & cheese.  While I typically love grilled onions with mine, the bacon, sour cream and soft texture provided a delicious beginning.  Herring and other dishes made the rounds and we'll probably see a few photos from the group.

Next up...it's dinner time, but our group is only 20 and we have food for 60!

It sure looked like food for 60 as those plates whizzed around the tables.  When we finally cried a group "uncle", and the waitresses set the remnants off to the side for leftover wrapping, it was really only food for 25.

It may sound silly, but my favorite part of the meal was the Szmalec. It's a spread of lard with bacon bits and seasonings, and it was fantastic on the wonderful Polish bread. It reminded me a lot of schmaltz, which I love to eat spread on some good rye bread.

Doesn't sound silly at all.  In fact, the Szmalec was one of the deciding factors when CTD and I were choosing an opening night dinner spot.

I couldn't take it any longer
Lord I was crazed
And when the feeling came upon me
Like a title wave
I started swearing to my god and on my mother's grave
That I would share pie to the end of time
I swore that I would share pie to the end of time!
So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
'Cause if I gotta share another pie slice with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time,
So I can eat my pie alone!!

Oh, and the hot borscht was delicious. Surprising, too. I was used to cold beet borscht with a boiled potato and some cold sour cream.
