~ Chuck's Steak Houses
Growing up in Connecticut, I thought Chuck's was a local chain. Over time they came and went ... I hear they started in Hawaii ... I found some in Florida that call themselves "The Original" ... The web site for the remaining ones in CT make it seem like they are the seamlessly connected to Chuck. Who knows what the real story is?

I don't know what the story is, but back in the mid '60s I used to go to the Chuck's Steak House on the Post Road in Orange. It had this new thing called a salad bar. It was the first salad bar I'd ever seen, and I believe it was the first one in Connecticut.

In the sixties, I used to frequent the one in La Jolla, Ca. When I moved to Hawaii, the manager there told me the one in Honolulu was the original.

I can remember going to one in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. We went there with friends , many times, who loved the place. I detest salad bars and did not think their steaks were really good, so those meals were not enjoyable to me.

Come to think of it, it was at Chuck's that I found this great wine -- Mateuse.

I had a friend (very evil) who judged his dates according to what they would say when he ordered Mateus. He had a date with a gal one night and ordered this poor excuse for a wine. She said "Ahhh, Mateus; that's my juice!" Last time he ever dated her!

We frequented Chuck's in Los Angeles all the time we lived there during the late sixties. Great food! Once, when we vacationed in Maui during the early 70's, we usually had lunch at Chucks at least every other day that we were there. Loved it!

Chuck's in Marina del Rey. Long gone but they served a great lobster tail and steak combination. Lancer's wine in California.

Like Ann, I had never heard of Chuck's. They must have had trouble infiltrating the Supper Club Belt. Why no link? Chuck's Steak Houses are still around. Although Chuck's wine list is seriously degraded from their heyday.

I must say that this thread is the first I time I have ever heard of Chuck's Steak House, but given the fact that Chuck is a Cornell "Hotelie" means that they are probably good places. LOL

There you go! When I was in high school in the early 70's I was a bus boy at a Sheraton Motor Lodge. Those two were at the top of our wine list! And this week playing in the lounge. Danny Mack!

They also used the Lancer's bottles as salt and pepper shakers. Split size.

I can't think of a steakhouse chain that fills the niche that Chuck's did. It wasn't as high-end as Fleming's or Ruth's, but they were better than Outback or similar places.

Our saying for that very same Chuck's in Sherman Oaks was... Let's go tip a table.
The bar there had a window looking out onto the Valley.
When it was time to get up for our meal, I turned in the chair which rotated with me. It was a rotating chair. When I did, the arm of the chair went under the table, tipping it and all of the drinks on top of it.
I still to this day say It Wasn't My Fault!

Unfortunately, it wasn't as good a view as it was from Monty's Steak House in Westwood-----on a clear day you could see Catalina Island from there!

Only one left in CT is Rocky Hill. Orange closed too. It was still open a few years ago but it burned down I think?
