Coming to Chicago

We are coming (March 22-24) to stormy, husky, brawling Chicago, arriving with wanton hunger.  ChiTownDiner will be putting us through the paces on Friday and Saturday, but how about Sunday?

Anyone available to get together on Sunday the 24th?

I'm thinking a stop at Boba Burger might be in order at some point in the weekend.  If the Lechon Burger isn't enough to sway you, I don't know what it will take.  Maybe a Seoul BurgerKimchi Seoul Hot Dog anyone?  Or does the Hawaiian Burger spark your interest?  Fresh cut Fries too!

If they get out of Westmont it will be a miracle.

I hope you make it to Hoosier Mama. Why bother coming to Chicago otherwise.
I may have some time that weekend. We're in the middle of contract negotiations and there's a possibility I'll be on strike. If so, I won't know when I'll need to be back at the bargaining table.

Hoping you're settled in from trips to Europe, Asia and Florida before you go on strike....

I will leave that up to CTD, but he's not one to be pie deprived for very long.

Good luck with the work situation.  That must be very stressful.

We're available the 23rd/24th for whatever is going on.

Maybe the multicultural strip mall in Niles (part 2)?

Glad you are going to join us Rocky

Now that the Wisconsin portion of our back-to-back Lake Michigan eating challenge is in the rear view mirror, we will be paying more attention to this thread.

Kind of hoping that locals will take the lead on this.  Buddy's suggestion of Boba Burger sure sounds like a good one.

The locals will be happy to take the lead, but a little guidance from our guest would be appreciated.  How many total stops are you interested in?  Any places you've been wanting to try but haven't gotten around to?  Anything you'd particularly like us to avoid?

Looking forward to Sunday!

Buddy-
How about an Italian beef?  Johnnie's is my favorite, but I am always willing to try out something new.

A place to get a good Chicago Dog is always appreciated.  And I have fond memories of the fried shrimp at a place, I think it was called Red Hot Ranch?

Who makes a good hot fudge sundae?

Those are the first things that jumped out at me...

Cliff, have you tried a Mother-In-Law sandwich yet?  Fat Johnnie's serves a decent version.

Plus, the neighborhood around 71st and Western is wonderful.  Plenty of coffee shops and art museums...

Ask Gregg to take you!

Gertie's makes a good hot fudge sundae, and if you're going there, you may as well go a few extra blocks to Calumet Fisheries.

Just sayin'.

Also, have we narrowed down the day- Saturday?  Sunday?  Both?  We're just not available Friday.

Re: Coming to Chicago 2019/03/18 16:00:55 (permalink)
No argument that Johnnie's is one of the best, if not the best, Italian Beef in Chicago.  But our "go to" spot for visitors lately is Bob-O's on the northwest side.  They are consistently ranked among the top five along with Johnnie's and Al's, and their Fresh Hand Cut Fries are superior to both of theirs.  Plus they've got a full fast food menu, including a top notch version of the CSDBob-Os Italian Beef was included in the 2015 Chicago Crawl, but I believe you missed it.  Here's a good chance to revisit.

We can still go to Red Hot Ranch for those outstanding Fried Shrimp.  Plus, they make an excellent version of the Smashdown Griddle Burger that shouldn't be missed.

Who makes a good hot fudge sundae?  Dang, that's a good question.  Margie's comes to mind, although I harbor an ancient grudge against them after a bad experience had there by abe_froeman and me.  However, if you insist, I'll set aside bad feelings just this once.

Another possibility; new to me, is 26th Street Sugar Shack.  They popped up on a Google search of Best Hot Fudge Sundae in Chicago.  The images of long lines (maybe it's owned by Hot Doug Sohn) indicates they must be doing something right, and the product looks pretty good too.  Could be an opportunity for all of us to make a "new discovery".    I like Ice Cream, but I tend to favor savories in my quest for good Roadfood.  We may need some outside help for this one.

The list so far, seeking input from other parties, looks like this (in no particular order):
Boba Burger
Bob-O's (I'm sensing a "Bob" theme here.  Bobtail Ice Cream almost made the list, but they were recently bought by a larger company)
Red Hot Ranch
Margie's/26th Street Sugar Shack/some other Hot Fudge Sundae choice

Let me here from you Contingent.  We have the beginnings of an epic day here.  What needs to be added to the list?

Buddy

We'll be starting Sunday off at Ann Sather's with a normal breakfast time meal.  While I don't have the exact time fixed, it will most likely be before the Roadhouse Household has heard the cock crow!

If Margie's once wronged the Roadhouse clan, then they are on our bad list, too!  As much as I love a good hot fudge sundae, please don't feel we have to drive too far out of the way for one.  No doubt I am still feeling the after affects of not ordering that while at Beernsten's on Saturday.  That itch could just as easily get scratched around home before the weekend arrives.

All the suggestions look good.  We do have an early evening flight, so I want to be at MDW by 5:45pm.

Since Rocky was asking, where should we meet and at what time?

Re: Coming to Chicago 2019/03/19 14:17:55 (permalink)
I'll let CTD set the breakfast time then I'll build from there.  Of all the places listed, Red Hot Ranch opens the earliest, at 10:30am.  Maybe back time Ann Sather's based on that.  Not sure which location CTD has in mind, but except for the Granville store, they're all reasonably close to either Red Hot Ranch location.

The forecast for Sunday is low 50s and scattered showers, so I'm thinking we go to the Ashland Avenue RRH where we can eat inside.  If the weather improves we can call an audible and head to the original location to enjoy dining al fresco along scenic Western Avenue.

After that, it's a toss up for what comes next; Boba Burger or Bob-O's.  Any preference from our guest (note the lower case)?

Finally, if we end the day at Sugar Shack on 26th St., you'll be just 35 minutes from Midway.

How's that work for you?

Buddy

Sounds good....Ann Sather's at 9am with a location to be picked by Friday.  Even if there is a wait, we should be out by 10:30am.  Don't want to get there to early for day old fries.
