Contingent on availability, how about a Christmas-time get-together?

I am home in Wisconsin for two weeks at Christmas and would like a chance to see my Roadfood friends once more this year, and perhaps give Gregg the needle.

Working around the Roadhouse's busy work and travel schedule, we've zeroed in on December 19 or 20 for a dinner in Fabulous Chicagoland. The ChiBear is busy choosing the venue and planning a Fine event.

Those dates won't work for everyone, so I'd like to set up a north-of-the-border event, too. I've heard great things about the dining scene in Stoughton. Can we make this happen?

Our best option is Tuesday the 19th.  We leave on the 20th, so if you want to meet us for breakfast...

Is the 18th a possibility?

I'll bet you wind up at White Castle or Portillo's.

Get.  Off.  My.  Lawn.

Mrs. C will be on the Kohl's clock the weekends of Dec. 1-3 and 15-17  so Dec. 8-10 and 22-23 would likely work for us, although certain weekdays might be possible, too.

I just returned home from a country drive that included a visit to Ft. Atkinson, where Brock's River Walk caught my eye.  While I'm disappointed by the absence of fried chicken, the rest of the menu looks pretty good.  And if you don't want to go as far as Fort, The Grist in Lake Mills would be an option.

Whatever.

Yes, the 18th will work for ME, but neither abe_froeman nor Mrs. Roadhouse will be available.  Monday nights they volunteer at the local cat house...er, shelter.

I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds here, but I thought I might jump on this thread's coattails to propose another get together for a similar time frame.  First, a little background: If you'll recall, we made a side trip to Milwaukee's Bastille Day Festival after The Contingent's summer Fish Fry outing.  While there we stumbled upon a two man blues/jug band called Boo Bradley.  As I mentioned in my post, they were fantastic!

Well, just in time for a Holiday get together, they are performing live and in person in Kenosha on Friday, December 15th.  They'll be playing at a suitably dingy looking hole in the wall called Pete's Place on the east side of town.  There's no cover charge, and no mention of a drink minimum, but you'd be a damn fool to not have a pop or two while enjoying the remarkable musicianship of these two buskers.  I've already got it marked on my calendar, so who else is in?

EDIT: Just called Pete's Place to get the lowdown.  Turns out they do a full Fish Fry on Friday nights; voted #1 in Kenosha according to the helpful lady who answered the phone.  There is a slight (but manageable) catch; the kitchen closes at 9pm and Boo Bradley doesn't take the stage until 9:30.  The nice lady also said they're busiest between 4-7:30pm.  So maybe we get there 7:45, order some food, grab some drinks, then hang out until 9:30 for the music.

The real question is this: If we go see Boo Bradley on the 15th, and get together again on the 18th or 19th, can we really stand to see that much of each other in that short a period of time?  I'm willing to try if y'all are!

I'm entering into the last days of classes and final exams/papers, and we leave on the 21st for our trip, so I doubt we'll be able to join up anywhere unless it's on specific evenings and close to home. Something on the 19th may work if it isn't too far off, but an outing on the 15th probably won't happen for us (especially if we have to stay up past 9 pm--we're Old People now!). But pick the times and places that work well for you, and we'll see if we can make it happen.

While I can't imagine better place to be than Kenosha on a Friday night, the 15th is a no-go for me.

However, if you do make the trip and have time the next afternoon, TomKen's opens at noon on Saturdays and the JRPfeffs and I are planning on having some chicken there sometime during the last 2 weeks of December.

ChickenMan,
TomKen's will be a no-go for me, at least for the foreseeable future.  I'm working on the 16th, and we'll be eating KC BBQ for the last two weeks of the month.  Maybe in January.

CSD,
I can't vouch for the Fish Fry, but I guarantee you won't be disappointed with Boo Bradley.  See you at Pete's around 7:45!

Anyone else?

I'm up for TomKen's depending on the date. Unfortnately I can't make Pete's on the 15th as I'm going to the Bucks-Bulls game.

I'm up for TomKen's depending on the date.

If we pick a Saturday we could start at Double B's, hit TomKen's a little later, and possibly finish at State Fair Inn.  Add a couple of non-eating stops and it's a Highway 59/Greenfield Ave. day tour.

I've had a slight complication. American Airlines shortchanged me on award mileage for my trip to Spain, leaving me 151 miles short of Executive Platinum status. I can get there by taking a one-way flight between Chicago and Milwaukee.

So the plan is for me to cut out of dinner early for the Last Plane to Clarksville (aka the 9:15 ORD-MKE flight). It will make compelling TV as the WGN news crew chases me to & through O'Hare and then waits for my arrival at Mitchell Field.

Bobbi can return to finish eating, as her drive to MKE will take a couple hours less than my flight there.

Definitely worthy of me wearing my beret/txapel.

UPDATE:
Problem resolved. It pays to whine a lot.

As of now, the potential dates are the 18th & 19th.  My understanding is, whatever we do on that date will happen south of the Cheddar Curtain.

If it has to fall on Monday the 18th, there's still a chance for abe_froeman and Mrs. Roadhouse to join us if we aim for a slightly later start to dinner; say 7:30...?  Otherwise, if we pick Tuesday the 19th, we're available any time.

I believe there was consensus in the FB group to dine at El Bistro Latino on 12/19 at 6 p.m.

The pre-dinner dinner at Firecakes Donuts is optional.

Elaine, we are trying to work around the Roadhouse's schedule, who all head to KC on the 20th. This place was suggested to minimize their travel the day before. It is also damn good according to BR.

If we're settled on Puerto Rican food, depending on the size of the group, I might suggest switching it up to our other Puerto Rican option, Santiago's.  It has more of a Roadfood vibe; a little more low key and homey.  And the food is as good or, in some dishes, better than El Bistro Latino.  The only drawback is, Santaigo's is really small, so a bigger group wouldn't work well there.  Let's get a final head count and we can make a decision.

For the record, either of irisarbor's suggestions is within reasonable travel distance, if all else falls through.
