Sadly, Mongolian Moose Muffle wasn't on the menu and we had to settle for Mongolian Beef, which turned out to be an excellent substitution for the Beef with Pea Pods.

Thanks to all who made the drive for dinner last night.  Mrs. C and I had a good time (except for the homeward drive DIRECTLY into the setting sun) and the food while not anything transcendent was perfectly fine, and I suspect I may have been the only one of us who'd never been to that type of American Chinese restaurant.  I'd love to see some photos of it from the '60s.

An excellent wrap up of last night's gathering.  Good, not great, food, definitely made better by outstanding company.  The Mongolian Beef was absolutely the star at the table.  It was different from most versions; a little more heat than expected, lots of onions, served in a flavorful gravy as opposed to the drier versions usually presented.

Apps were pretty good too.  The Fried Shrimp which showed up looking like heavy, over-battered onion rings turned out to be light and airy with intense Shrimp flavor.

Looking forward to seeing the photos.

The decor was a big plus too.  It was all very kitschy, but it wasn't until the end of the night when I made my way through the bar to the men's room that I realized just how over the top the ambiance actually was.  The whole room was almost ablaze in blinding bright tropical colors and really took me back to the Polynesian restaurant of my youth, Shanghai Lil's.

Lil's dark and cozy operation was on the northwest side of Chicago.  To my preadolescent mind, the food was almost secondary to the entertainment, including grass skirted dancers and a live band.  We didn't go that often, but my sense is, anytime we visited, we must have been celebrating a special occasion.

We actually have a neo-Tiki Restaurant right here in Des Plaines, Tiki Terrace.  Maybe after the dust has settled from the MSP Crawl I'll organize a Taste of Des Plaines Part II.  Hmm...I know a couple of Canadian cousins who will be visiting the area at the end of May who might have an appreciation for a Tiki night out.  Stay tuned!

From their website....I also posted these on TIKI CENTRAL under the Breakers on "locating Tiki" thread.
Love those vintage mugs...some rare ones.

And for me to feel like scanning and editing, too.

Welcome to The Br'ers, where they have both kinds of cuisine - Chinese and American!  I wonder if people driving by at night think there's rabbit on the menu.

Get your own tai.  This is mai tai.  And note the kitschy, Caucasian-friendly place mat.

As Jed Clampett might say, "Enough palaverin', let's commence t' them vittles!"  Because you'd so expect to find Jed Clampett in a tiki restaurant...if he wasn't, like, dead and stuff.

I feel full just looking at all that food...but I'll be hungry again in 20 minutes.

Nicely done and well documented.  Thanks for making it real, cuz everyone knows, if there aren't pictures, the meal wasn't really eaten.

JRPfeff

We are planning an evening with the MFL's at Moonshine Pub & Grill followed by musical entertainment in the coming weeks. Moonshine offers Serbian specialties and fried chicken. They are located on S 27th Street in Milwaukee within a block of Mazo's & Leon's.

Their menu is here.

This does not necessarily have to be on a weekend. Who would like to join us?

Sorry Jeff and Brad. I realize linking to Facebook is worse than a Rickroll.

Anybody up for dinner in the Milwaukee area on Saturday, June 8?  Mrs. C and I are going to the Brewers game that day and since it starts at 3:10 we'll be ready for some chow once the game's over, and Bluemound Road west from Miller Park certainly offers a lot of options.  I'm definitely interested in checking out Maxie's sometime.

Any further plans on this outing?

This coming Saturday is June 8 and we're still planning on eating somewhere in Milwaukee after the game, although we haven't picked where yet.  We're staying on Bluemound Rd. at Brookfield's western edge, so someplace between there and Miller Park would work well.

I had a few minutes to look at the map...there is of course the Brookfield Kopp's, and I think most of us have not tried the KRK Burger.  The FOTD are Orange Dream and Butterfinger.

I think a few Contingenteers have said Jose's Blue Sombrero is pretty good.

However, we did just do Kopp's and other Mexican a couple weekends ago while there with the Canadians...

Maxie's definitely still looks interesting and they do take reservations.

Anyone tried Double B's BBQLe Reve is always lovely.  We could do the relocation of Chilango Express...roasted lamb on the weekends *insert Homer drool emoji*  Anyone tried Daddy's Soul Food Grille?

JRPfeff, Pie Diva and myself had some good appetizers at Double B's last year but didn't get too deep into the menu.  No experience with any of the others.

Other places I've flagged as possible are Caradero Club Pizza (approved by Gyp and MFL), Saz's State House, Crawdaddy's on Greenfield (a new-owner reopening of the original) and Kegel's Inn.

Who all's interested?  I believe Buddy has to work this Saturday, Gyp might be in Appleton, and the JRPfeffs' current weekend schedules appear to have them pretty unavailable for awhile.

They are unveiling a large bronze statue of South Milwaukee's own Hall of Fame professional rassler, The Crusher. I contributed towards it and there will be food, beer, lots of beer, and the great polka band The Squeezettes and did I mention beer? Of your choices I'd head to Kegel's Inn and order one pork shank dinner, two plates and maybe an extra soup. That would be on my list of the ten best things to eat in Milwaukee. And it is very close to Miller Park I'm told. Sorry Brad but I've looked forward to this celebration for over half a year. Have fun whatever you do. I give you Da Crusher and his rasslin' brother, Dick The Bruiser. May they both have some easy bumps.
