You might, perhaps, be waiting a long time here. Just might be a memorial statue in his home town, or where he got started...

Hey @ScreamingChicken, stop by The HandleBar for a refreshing malt beverage following the contest. I will be serving tonight.

Sorry, but I didn't see your post until today and Pewaukee was too far to drive, anyway.

We wound up at Café Hollander at The Corners of Brookfield.  Definitely a move in the opposite direction compared to some of the places on my original list, but the food was pretty good overall.

Not a fan. Well not exactly. The food at Café Hollander is ok but overpriced and not worth, imho, what they charge for it. Good beer selection and that machine for washing your glass is way cool.

A get together custom made for this "unthemed" thread, and vice versa:

We're meeting ChiBear15 for dinner tomorrow (Tuesday, 8/6) night at Beograd Cafe on Chicago's north side.  It is a charming little operation with a Serbian and Balkan menu.  They also have a full deli and butcher shop as part of the store, so bring a cooler.

All are welcome to join us.  Time is 7pm.  We need to make a reservation, so please respond here on the thread.  No surprise pop-ins please.

Hope to see as many Contingencies as possible!

Fan-freakin'-tastic!  Delicious food, served in abundance, for a ridiculously low price.

We started with the Shopska Salad (traditional Serb salad of tomatoes, cucumber, onions, bell pepper, and Feta), Fresh Cabbage Salad (finely shredded cabbage doused with vinaigrette), and Ajvar (roasted red pepper spread) & Kajmak (a Serbian cross between butter and cream cheese) served with beautiful light fluffy (not so) flatbread.

Next up was the Beograd Special Sampler Plate with eight chevapchichi (skinless, hand formed sausages), four gourmet sausages (a little bit spicy), two pljeskavica (Serb hamburgers), two pork chops, & bacon; A "Chicago River" Crepe containing pork prosciutto, mozzarella, ham, salami, tomatoes, and sour cream; and a Potato Burek.

For dessert we had a couple of triple layered peanut butter pastries, and a huge crepe, filled with Eurokrem (like Nutella, but white chocolate flavored) and cherries.

So much food for six people, we took home two of the chevapchichi and one of the spicy sausages.  All that plus drinks, and espressos with dessert for $106, plus a very generous tip for our outstanding waiter.

If you're an Instagram user, you can see ChiBears15's photos of the entire meal.

We'll try to give more advance notice before our next visit to Beograd Cafe.  The unique and extensive menu makes it the kind of place you definitely want to visit with a big group of friends.

I thought I would share some of my photos from last night's dinner at Beogard. As Jeff said, it was a very good meal at an amazing price for all the food we consumed. It's also a good thing that he already posted what everything was, because I doubt if I would have been able to remember.

A not very good picture of their sign.

They have an enormous menu.

We didn't try any of the Serbian pizza.

It was a perfect night to eat outside, and they had a very nice patio.

The beer was shared three ways.

This was the Fresh Cabbage Salad. They also had a sour cabbage salad that I was hoping to try, but it's a winter dish only.

The flatbread. Very doughy and chewy, and tasty.

This was the Shopska Salad.

The Ajvar spread.

The Chicago River Crepe.

The incredible meat platter.

I think the potato burek was my favorite part of the meal. I probably could have ordered another one and eaten it myself. A bit like a potato knish.

While waiting for the others to arrive I looked around the restaurant's market. I didn't know if this was going to be on the menu and I had thought about getting one as a "while you wait appetizer".

I was glad they still had them available.

This was the dessert crepe, cut into six healthy-sized pieces.

Thanks Jeff for organizing this feast.

Get there before 5pm so you can take advantage of their "Daily Specials and New Signature Dinner Menu."  Our reservation was for 7pm, so we missed out on entrees like Goulash, Moussaka, Sarma, and Pork Schnitzel.  Not sure why they call it a "Dinner Menu" when it becomes unavailable after 5pm.  Still, no complaints.  We had ample grub from the regular menu and all of it was excellent; not a weak link on the table.

Haha I thought I could get through one thread without a salad joke... Thanks for setting him up, Joe!

I apologize for the late notice on dinner.  I know those in Wisconsin need to know ahead of time prior to coming to Chicago because of work schedules.  It was just an idea that popped into my head over the weekend and luckily the restaurant was a winner.  Beograd Café was never on my list until I drove by with Jeff one day and he praised it.

Great food, great service, and great company!

Cheers,
Danny

Had lunch at Boegrad Cafe' on Saturday. We had the Shopska salad and a spinach & cheese burek. Good food at reasonable prices. We couldn't understand why so many customers were eating burgers and fries. Maybe there's something that we don't know. Next time, we'll try the goulash. Thanks for the suggestion.
