The Cuban sandwich of the better half of the Roadhouse Duo.  It was impressively large.

Excellent documentation, Gyp.  That was some good food; the sausage and pigtail fries were big hits at my end of the table and I liked that the burnt ends were nicely fatty.

Mrs. C just left for work and won't be home until around 9, and Google Maps says I'm 90 minutes from Art & Alma's.  I'll bet there's plenty of rare prime rib when they open at 4...

Yeah, it was probably the best "white" Wisconsin 'Que I've had.  Speed Queen in Milwaukee holds the title for "black" BBQ.  I've discussed the difference in various threads centered around Kansas City where the differences are well pronounced.

White barbecue tends to be less smoky, with more subtle, nuanced seasoning.  Black barbecue has more, well...soul.  The seasoning is more assertive and the smoke is a prominent player in the taste of the final product.  So much so, that a belch several hours removed from your meal will still produce a wisp of hickory fragrance.

David Alan Alan's started off on the right foot with plenty of good smoke aroma filling the large room.  All the sauces (eight of 'em IIRC) were appealing on some level.  All the meats were moist and had good flavor.  The Cheddar Jalapeno Sausage was the favorite.

Sides were tasty, with the Mac & Cheese and Beans being standouts.  Greens were a bit bland, but a shot of hot sauce brought them up to par.

Two complaints, one big, one not so much.  The little quibble was over Mrs. Roadhouse's so-called Cuban Sandwich.  Normally, this is made with sliced Roast Pork, Ham, Pickles and Cheese served on a special bread and pressed in a panini grill.  As you can see from the above picture, it looked nothing like a typical Cubano. It still tasted good, but had nothing to do with the real thing.

The bigger complaint was the total absence of Ribs.  Unfortunately, DAA's only serves Ribs after 5pm.  Their explanation (they're still in the smoker) made perfect sense, but was no less disappointing.

In any case, David Alan Alan's is worth a return visit sometime in the future, but maybe timed for dinner when we can get a rack of bones.

Mrs. MFL and I journeyed to David Alan Alan's Smokehouse and Saloon today to dine with friends. They had no ribs (it was before 5pm of course) and worse yet they had no jalapeno cheese hot links (Their butcher, which we went to after our meal was out). We chose smoked corned beef and I'll go out on a limb and say it was my favorite of all time, smoked chicken, which had a very nice seasoning, pulled pork, which was very bland, and smoked brisket, which had no smoke ring or seasonings that I could discern. Like Boudreaux mentioned, our collard greens screamed out for hot sauce of which there was none, so we used one of their well made BBQ sauces. Our BBQ beans were right up there among the best I've ever had. We agreed our jalapeno cornbread was well made and very tasty. Nothing that might be spicy at some BBQ joints had heat that would cause anyone to say "too hot for me". Our 4 meat platter ($29.99) was easily enough for 4 people making this a real bargain meal. While neither Speed Queen or Smoque have anything to worry about, I can't wait to return. I'm still in awe of that corned beef.

Holy mackerel, how did I forget about that Smoked Corned Beef???  You're absolutely correct; along with the sausage, it was the best meat on the tray.

As for the hot sauce, when did you get bashful about asking for stuff not stocked on the table?  One mention to our waitress, and there was a bottle of Cholula sitting in front of me moments later.

Agreed on all other counts.  Well established Greasehouses don't need to worry about DAA's pulling business away.  But this well run operation does bring 'Que Cred to far flung Mukwonago, and even makes me want to drive back up there sometime for another go around.

I told Gyp that if I brought along a loaf of rye bread and some pickles next time I bet I could make at least 6 overflowing corned beef sandwiches for the price of 2 at Jake's Deli. That just blew me away.

Strong possibility we'll be free tomorrow (Sunday, 11/11).  Any interest in getting together; any takers?  Any Cheeseheads wanna come down this way for a change?  Or meet somewhere in the middle?  No specific plans, open to suggestions, but don't want to make it a major travel day.

I’m up for something on Sunday.

Speaking of ribs again I went to Pat’s on Thursday and had a 1/2 rack of baby backs. Really tasty.

Yeah and they have 5 sauces on the side. Pat’s House (red mild sauce), Brown Brown (brown sugar and molasses base), Alisha’s Special (sweet and spicy), Apple Chunky (tangy sauce with apples) and Memphis Mad Dog (spicy).

Don't test me ChickenLickin'.  Even if that is your picture on their home page, don't suggest Barnaby's (Northbrook location only) unless you're ready to make the trek down here.

Gyp, once the Screamer makes up his mind we can toss around a few ideas.  I'm game for anything, but not too early a start.
