Contingent spontaneous/casual/unthemed events

Gyp and BuddyRoadhouse posted these to the supper club thread so I thought I'd spin them off into a more appropriate thread of their own, for this and future use.

Gyp
I'm up for a Sunday get together.

BuddyRoadhouse
Sounds like we might have the makings of a casual (non?)supper club get together this Sunday.  Maybe make a day of it?  Couple of quick places in the afternoon followed by dinner?  Or is that overreach?  Interest, ideas?

Iron Grate BBQ???

I don't know if I can commit a whole day but I might be available for an early supper.  Then again, Smoke Day is the 27th and the Honey Butter tour is June 2nd so we already have a fair amount of upcoming activity on the calendar.

I've driven past Louisa's a couple of times and it's caught my eye as a place I wouldn't mind checking out sometime.  Is there such a thing as Kenosha-style pizza?

Not sure what I was thinking when I said we were available this Sunday.  In fact, we are picking up the world travelers from the airport at noon(ish).  We could still be available a little later in the day and even the evening, but we'll need to play it by ear.

I'm booked between 4pm-8pm. If anyone is in Milwaukee and free, the most amazing 1950's New Orleans R & B band is playing at the Tonic Tavern-no cover. The band is called The Hungry Williams, named after a 1950's NOLA session drummer.

CURVE BALL!!!

Unbeknownst to us, abe_froeman & Mr. Maki are planning to head up to Nite Owl tomorrow, Saturday, for lunch.  We've been invited to join them, and X1 is already committed to meeting us there.  We're shooting for a 12:30 arrival time.  All are invited to join us.

In the bigger picture, that means we're less likely to head up to Milwaukee on Sunday, especially since we're picking up JRPfeff & Pie Diva at O'Hare at noon.  They may want to eat lunch when they get off the plane, or might just want to rush home and take a 15 hour nap.  In any case, we'll likely not drive up a second time in two days.  So join us at Nite Owl at 12:30 on Saturday or make plans without us on Sunday.

Nite Owl...is that the place that uses Velveeta?

Incidentally, just a few steps away is The Packing House and it opens at 4pm.  Food for thought.

Sunday's a blank canvas for me right now, so throw some ideas at it and see what sticks.

I sure hope so.  I love the stuff.

And Iron Grate BBQ is right around the corner.  Have you been to The Packing House?  Any good?  We've passed it about a hundred times going back and forth on Layton, but never checked them out.

Again, not likely we'll make the trip north twice in two days, but if the right offer is made, you never know...

Well, I'll say that Nite Owl makes a very good burger at an excellent price.  And judging by the crowds inside and outside a lot of other people think the same way.  While closing the doors when the meat's gone is usually associated with classic barbecue joints, Nite Owl has the same practice.  When the day's supply of fresh beef's gone, that's it.

So after you pick them up at the airport are you just going to drop them at some random location?  Or did they park their car at your house?

I got to go with Villa d'Carlo on this one. Yes, there are other places in town with good pizza, but when I think of pizza, theirs is what I want.

The Packing House is semi-upscale supper club (no relish tray) whose prices are just at the cusp between totally worth it and it's a bit overpriced. (I do side with the good value side) I recommend it to strangers using the across the street Mitchell International Airport as the best business casual restaurant not in the Downtown area. Imho though, it's not a Roadood restaurant.

I'm going to be making another 2-day trip to St. Louis on June 16-17, if anyone has any interest or just wants to get out of the house for awhile.  This time I'm strongly considering LaSalle-Peru barbecue, as shown on this map:

https://www.google.com/maps/search/barbecue/@41.3288759,-89.1208974,15z

I've never been to any of the 3 places shown, but a couple of coworkers stopped at Haze Smokehouse a few months back and later told me that they liked the food.

All 3 open at 11 on Saturday so I could try a small sample of each and still hopefully be later able to indulge in Springfield's bustling, vibrant dining scene.

Also, since I'll be staying in Springfield and will have all day to get to St.Louis, I'm considering an extra 240 miles (120 each way) of driving to check out Honey Chile' Please in Waynesville, MO.  We had actually hoped to eat there back in March but after lunch in Tulsa we were simply too full.

If we're gonna do Baraboo, we might as well toss in The Dells.  Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty, here we come!

I have never been to PBCS, and am now intrigued.

Add Noah's Ark, Ishnala (out of my price range), Monk's Bar, Go-karting, The Wisconsin Ducks, & Cimaroli's ($2.50 Old Fashioneds), and you've got the start of weekend outing.

Dial back the intrigue Jim; it was a joke.  Whatever fond memories I may have of childhood visits to Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty are now replaced by reality: weird pieces of fried chicken that look real, but upon deconstruction seem to be somehow man-made, unsmoked ribs that may have been boiled, baked, or both, and the iconic pitchers of milk and bowls of butter once served at every table have been replaced by individual cardboard cartons and frozen hard institutional pats from Sysco.

Monk's Bar, OTOH, poses real possibilities.

Sorry.  I know you were probably hoping to get a big slab of Beef Ribs butchered directly from Babe The Blue Ox and I come along and ruin the dream.

You do know the Duck Rides don't involve actual ducks, right?

And it'll keep looking like that for awhile longer, as my boss has decided that it'd be better if I stayed home that week.  At least that gives me more time to micro-plan my itinerary...

Unexpected visit? See, no Velveeta, not that there is anything wrong with that. One of my favorite bands, The Velveetatones are based in Monroe, WI. Like the Traveling Willburys, the band has different members.

Them was some tasty Burgers, alright.  I'm always amazed at the menu listing for a double version of the Nite Owl burger.  It was all I could do to get through a single.  But I'll never understand why places that pour so much pride and attention into the rest of their food so often serve institutional frozen French Fries.

Great Question Buddy, but as a restaurant veteran who ran a very high volume unit where we did scratch Chips and Fries, it falls into the category I call "so easy, it's hard". Which means only a few steps, if you mess one up, it is a disaster. Homemade fries when done right are awesome...when wrong, they flat out s%&k. Plus, you have to have a solid staff (ie: the same people doing it) that can do that product consistently. And...it beats the hell out of your fryers and is labor intensive.

Anyone interested in Wedron Office for chicken this coming Sunday?  I'll be headed north from Champaign and am planning on checking out the Ottawa area, so suggestions and/or company are welcome!
