Cooks Lobster House News -- Maine

A restaurant on Bailey Island in Harpswell, Maine, is for sale and has had only two owners in nearly 60 years. Beautiful place with great views and good seafood!! The first link is an article about the restaurant and its sale.

So you're meeting with your banker tomorrow?

Although if my math is correct 2015 will be Cook's 61st year, not its 60th as written in the article (provided the restaurant has operated continuously since 1955).

You and MH would both be happy with a steady supply of lobster.

Sure. But the grouse hunting isn't all that good there. And then there's the fact that LL Bean is located in Freeport, and there goes my credit card when lleechef has the day off.

MH--don't know much about grouse hunting, but there is plenty of other hunting in Maine. There's a Cabela's in the Portland area in addition to LL Bean in Freeport. Harpswell isn't all that far away. Bean's never closes, so it is definitely more dangerous to the credit card.

I forwarded the $1.79 million through your agent in Nigeria as instructed in the email. I rounded it up to $2 mil so you and Michael could find a nice place and get some grouse hunting gear.

I would suggest we not add grouse to the menu and caribou steaks are out.  Breakfast sausage is ok

And there better be fried clams all over the place!..Appet. clam roll,basket5s and let's bring back the pints and quarts to go.

WJ will send along a recipe for clam fritters and chowder,  Ok on the fritters, but go easy on the chowder.

BB will send a source for GOOD Maine Blueberry pie!

Adding stuffies will also be appreciated...if made with Linguica.and stay heavy on the clams

    Go to it!

I have everything needed for grouse hunting, except a flushing dog. I no longer have the patience for training a dog, so I'll need money to hire a trainer and to pay for board. Please send another million.

Since LL Bean was mentioned earlier... The store never closes in Freeport--even during a blizzard. MH and lleechef, get real customer service today. Read this:
    http://bangordailynews.com/2015/01/27/news/portland/as-storm-rages-closing-is-not-an-option-for-l-l-bean/
At the moment I can still hear the wind and an occasional town plow guy going by here. Storm should be winding down by 4 am or so tomorrow morning. So far so good. I haven't lost power. The snow is light fluffy stuff (as opposed to heavy wet), but the wind taking down limbs is a real issue. I bet Cook's Lobster House, almost surrounded by water, is taking a pounding right now.
    Here's a song inspired by the storm.http://bennetttheredonethat.bangordailynews.com/2015/01/27/video-this-is-maine-and-its-going-to-snow/#.VMfrMXxLtY8.facebook

A new article about the restaurant...apparently it hasn't been sold yet, and it opens for the season tomorrow, 4/16/2015.

This picture doesn't even begin to capture the natural beauty of the area. That is true of a lot of pictures of the Maine coast, mountains, and islands, etc.
Lisa, your Alaskan photos are beautiful, but being there must be really breathtaking experience at times.

No thanks! Beautiful in the summer, deepfreeze in the winter.  My Florida blood's too thin for that. Maybe we could trade lobstahs for stone crab....

Welcome to Roadfood, TallyMan. I see you only recently joined and just have 3 posts as of now.
Maine has a couple of varieties of crab that are sold here as cooked, picked out meat in small containers--used for cooking (think seafood stuffing, for example), in salads, or in fresh crab rolls. The crab rolls are prepared just as Maine lobster rolls are (on a grilled bun and just enough mayo to bind), and I actually like them better than lobster rolls. I wouldn't turn down either one! So Maine doesn't really need to get crabs from Florida. I ran a fresh crabmeat business for a few years and sold to wholesale and retail clients, before I decided to get a second degree and ended up in IT for almost 30 years before retiring.
It certainly was a deep freeze here in Maine this past winter with a lot of snow. Now we are in enjoying some really nice weather. I lived on the Florida Gulf coast just north of Tampa for two years, and I've lived near Galveston on the Texas Gulf coast. I am glad to not have to worry about hurricane season and the hot weather! I witnessed one hurricane first hand in my house; others we left and went inland.
It would be an awful situation, if we all wanted to live in the same place! Different strokes for different folks.

If I had a backer I would summer and winter in Maine and have a blast running that place!  Maine is like Florida for a former Alaskan!

This winter we often had much colder weather than Alaska. Granted this was a really abnormally cold and snowy winter, but we get a lot of cold and snow/sleet/freezing rain. An Alaskan would feel comfortable during Maine winters, for sure!

Heck, it was even colder in Ohio than it was in Alaska this past winter!  Thank goodness when I went in March it was plenty cold, with highs in the single digits.

Give the new owners a call. The restaurant is seasonal. You and MH could spend a few months in Maine every year. Of course, you would be working long hours in a hot kitchen and couldn't really enjoy it much!
