According to Google there are still two extant Coon Chicken Inns. One in Laurel Mississippi, and another in Jackson MS.

As usual, curiosity got the better of me, but for once, the internet didn't scratch my itch.  The main issue, of course is the appearance of the outside of the buildings.  Do they have the audacity/stupidity/indecency to preserve that absurd caricature of a black man as part of their image?

I checked out both locations on Google Earth Street View and came away only partially satisfied.  Both entries popped up instantly with full addresses.  Only the Laurel location indicated a phone number.  Neither showed any other basic business info, like hours or a link to a menu.  Even more disappointing was the actual street view.  Assuming all other info is correct, the only images that came up were of residential neighborhoods; not a business in sight.

Either someone is running these establishments out of their homes, perhaps as a catering operation, or the internet is seriously misinformed.

I can't believe they can have restaurants named " Coon Chicken " and " Sambos " . They removed all the Bronze statues from around the U of L campus area and the rest of Louisville. If you want History around here you have to read books. Sucks.
    rant over.
    Karl.

Let's see. It was a real chain from 1920's-1950's and Uncle Groucho's link was a film short done by Spike Lee, tongue firmly planted in cheek. I remember Sambo's in Milwaukee as recently as in the 1960's. I see racism living on in America long after I pass.

Frankly, I liked Sambo's. They did a good breakfast menu and were pretty good at dinner, too. All at a good price.

Many years ago, we had Sambo's in Dallas. I loved their pancakes but, always felt a little queasy about the name.

I used to go to Sambo's in San Leandro, (SF Bay Area) in the 80's. It was a good coffee shop.
