Dear Friend Lost to "New Recipe"

For years my favorite cookie has been Nabisco's Pinwheel.  You know, the luxurious dark chocolate-covered peaky marshmallow cookie that cost $6 bucks for a package of 12.  I didn't get them very often, but when I wanted to splurge, they were a go-to.  Earlier this week Mrs. Treetop got me a pack for my birthday, as she usually does.  I noticed immediately there was new packaging.  Uh-oh.  Then I saw the dreaded "New Recipe!"  Double Uh-oh.  A closer examination revealed the most disturbing change of all - what had previously been "Pure Chocolate and Marshmallow" was now "Fudge and Marshmallow."  WTF(udge)?  Suffice to say that what had been an iconic example of chocolate deliciousness is now a "mockolate" monstrosity worthy only of the garbage can.  Not sure who the marketing genius was that came up with this idea, or if it had anything to do with Nabisco sending its bakery south of the border, but whatever the case, Pinwheels as we knew and loved them are no more.  RIP. dear friend.

My deepest condolences on your loss.  At times like this is it best to reflect on the good times you had together. I know that no cookie could ever take the place of your beloved Pinwheel.  But I know that Pinwheel would want you to grieve and then move on. In time Pinwheel will be a wonderful, deep chocolate memory.

I will freely, if shamefully, admit I went out and had a dalliance with a box of Mallomars last night, but felt cheap and unfulfilled afterwards.

    Stock up now!

I hate when that happens to a favorite food.

Baby Ruth and O'Henry's come to mind.  New and improved chocolate is another name for waxy, tasteless brown covering.

Why do they feel the need to improve things that are perfect as is?

I used to feel that way about Pinwheels, they sold for about $4.50 which at the time were higher than the other brands, but then I discovered Mallomars, and Dare Whippets, which are cheaper and the Mallomars at least, better tasting.  Do you have a Big Lot near you?  Mallomars are kind of iffy, but I've been finding Whippets there pretty regularly.  Give them a chance.  I think they changed the Pinwheel formula for a wider distribution into warmer areas.

Thank goodness, Nabisco has come to their senses and have gone back to real chocolate on Pinwheels. Guess even the giants of the food industry can admit they make mistakes, too.

If you have Aldi's (German based discount food stores-they also own Trader Joe's) in your area you should try their version called Benton's Fudge Marshmallow Cookies. We like them just as much and they are considerably cheaper.
