I just got back a couple of weeks ago from a trip up north. Finally made it to the Triple X Family Restaurant (2 North Salisbury Street West Lafayette, IN; ph. 765-743-5373). I had the double cheeseburger and an order of corned beef hash, which just doesn’t exist in the South. It was pretty good.
But the biggest surprise was Tony’s I-75 Restaurant (8781 Main St, Birch Run, MI (989-624-5860), which is recommended here on roadfood.com. It’s just outside Frankenmuth, Michigan. https://roadfood.com/restaurants/tonys-i-75-restaurant/
When I went through the front door of this restaurant, the first thing that greeted my eyes was a little boy trying to eat a dish of ice cream that was about eight inches tall. It was much bigger than his head.
I sat down and ordered the BLT, since it was recommended on this site to try it. The picture on the roadfood.com website was a midget compared to what was brought out to my table.
This BLT is purported to have a full pound of bacon on it, but I think I was served at least a three pound version. Maybe more. The thing must have had 50 or 60 pieces of THICK bacon on it. I ate about 20 pieces for supper and 10 more pieces for breakfast, and it still looked like I hadn’t even touched the thing! I know I left at least 30 pieces of bacon behind at the hotel. And it only cost $9.95. I never got to the tomato, lettuce or bread. It was buried underneath the huge mound of bacon.
Reading the menu after I had ordered, I knew I had made a mistake. If I had ordered a single order of bacon, a full pound of bacon would have been brought to my table for $4.95.
Looking at the other offerings, I noticed that all their omelettes were twelve-egg omelettes. And it was for under $10 too!
The waitress told me that the biggest thing they have is the banana split. For it, they use OVER a half-gallon of ice cream. It is also under $10.
This place is a paradise for someone who is both poor and loves to eat. What I had was good. No complaints here!
I don’t understand their business plan, but the waitress said they’ve been doing this for 25 years. So who am I to argue! They must be doing something right. I know one thing. I’ll be back. Maybe next time I’ll be prepared to finish that BLT.
