Does anyone still cook up hot cereal for Breakfast?

Feeling nostalgic today...Made some Farina for breakfast. It was a favorite when mom made it for me in the 50's. Also loved Wheatina..and later when it came out Maypo(wasn't really a fan of Oatmeal so much.

I make oatmeal.  Either Quaker Old Fashioned or Bob's Red Mill Scottish Oats.  I make both with some butter, cinnamon and maple syrup

I make a big batch of steel-cut oatmeal once a week. I refrigerate it, take a serving at a time, add milk and microwave.

I make oatmeal, polenta and 10 grain cereal for my dad all the time. All made with milk and raisins.
Oatmeal made on the stove cooked for about 20 min until fully hydrated and nice and creamy.
The others come out good in the microwave, still takes about 15 min.
A little brown sugar, banana or berries.
I like these too but don't eat very often because they spike my blood sugar.

I also love oatmeal for dinner.  Just milk, butter and brown sugar.

Don't care for any of the instants although I do have them in the pantry.  Oh, occasionally I'll add sliced bananas if I have them.

Love having steel cut oatmeal when I'm out at a restaurant but at home it's Quaker.

My mother HATED oatmeal so I never had it as a kid.  I'm making up for it!

I like oatmeal in the winter. I don't care for the instant or quick. Steel cut is OK, but ordinary rolled oats are, IMO, the best. The WalMart brand is just as good as the Quaker. Even the regular cooks quick in the microwave.

My favorite use for oatmeal is as a topping for apple crisp

I saw "Cream of Rice" the other day, when I was buying Farina. Anyone ever had that? Not "Cream of wheat" which is Farina, but Cream of Rice??

Bring your water to a boil, add oats and seasonings. Go to bed. Wake up the next morning and temp the pot. Voila, 3 minute oats.

I rarely have oatmeal, but I do have grits on a weekly basis. Not sure if folks would count that as a cereal, (I really don't), even though some do and they eat it as if it were oatmeal, with sugar and butter. Bleh! Oatmeal, and other related cereals, are really not my favourites.

Had this discussion with my grown daughter about hot cereal, which she also loves. Got her to love Farina. She loves oatmeal which is my least favorite. She just brought home Malt-o-Meal from Target. Don't remember having it as a kid, but it's delicious. Not too different from Farina or Cream Of Wheat. If you've never had it, give it a try!

Our current favorite is Hamlyn's Scottish Oatmeal, but we also eat McCann's Quick-Cooking Irish Oatmeal.
When I was a child, my mother gave us Pablum (that is not a misspelling) Mixed Cereal, and I enjoyed it on a cold morning, even later on when I was in college and law school even though it was sold as baby food.  For me, that WAS "hot cereal." Didn't care for the other varieties (I know they had a rice version).  Haven't bought it for years, and I'm not sure it's even made any longer.

I still see it in the store, although I think it is made by a different company. (I think that it used to be actually made in Vermont) As I recall, there were 2 types: a fine flaked oat product, and a farina type product, both maple flavored. Another old brand I see is Fosca, still (I think) made in Jamaica.

Re: Does anyone still cook up hot cereal for Breakfast? 2018/10/18 21:21:33 (permalink)
Oatmeal is an evening comfort food meal for me, extremely rarely will I make it for breakfast.  That big round cardboard cylinder resides at the very back of my perpetually over stuffed pantry; it takes some effort to get it out so when I do, I usually leave it out for a few days and have it repeatedly before stuffing it way back in the back and putting every thing else back in.

I like it just with several pats of butter; occasionally some brown sugar but mostly just butter.  And maybe a few sprinkles of salt, too.  No milk or half and half.  Why you wanna put cold milk on hot cereal ? -- (my dad did that - as much milk as cereal -- I stared in disbelief when I made some for him in the weeks after mother passed and he grabbed it out of my hands, sat down and started pouring the milk).

It wasn't served often when I was a kid but it was always in the pantry then, too, I think.  The kids across the street always bragged about Postum, Farina, Cream of Wheat.  i asked my mother about that and they all appeared on our table soon thereafter.  Dad loved the Cream of Wheat, he'd always had it when growing up.  But when those packages were used up (or otherwise disappeared) the supply was not replenished.

I never thought steel-cut oats were worth the extra trouble but when I read a post about oat groats I had to get some.  i bought from the bulk bins at WF so I could buy a modest amount in case I didn't care for it.  Did it several times and kind of forgot about it.  I'd have to look up how to make them now.

This is how I  make steel-cut oats for morning consumption. The night before I bring the liquid to a boil, introduce the oats, give them a quick stir, then shut the heat off and put a lid on the pot. The next morning I turn the burner on low, let it simmer for 5 minutes then voila! This removes the hassle from a 30 minute breakfast.
