Donkey's Place In Camden, NJ

While I never get that far north and east, I'd have to say that I would love to make the pilgrimage to this neighbourhood bar and sample one of their cheese steaks  and a birch beer. Sounds like an old school Roadfood icon.

Perhaps phlmaestro can ship you a couple of Donkey's meat sandwiches!

Phlmaestro tends not to go to Camden or South Jersey generally but once in a blue moon, both for driving restriction reasons and because I don't like it over there.

I've seen something on that place once before, and I admit that as a traditionalist in most things, I kind of scoffed at the photo of a round cheesesteak.

We go to their other location, Donkey's Too. It's open later and is in a better neighborhood, Medford.

You mean Camden is no longer the garden spot of the Garden State?

On a barely related note, there is a corner bar in South Philadelphia called Fountain Porter that I've read about a couple times in the past year. They apparently have somewhat of a cult local following for their $5 hamburgers that are supposed to be fantastic.  I haven't tried them yet. I'll have to at some point. There are some photos of the burgers here:

leethebard, yes, it's the same food, but there's no bar at the Medford location.

A little late to this conversation, but I've been to both locations. They are completely different. The Camden one is an old bar, and would be worth a trip just for that if you're a fan of old bars. Yes the neighborhood is rough, but in the early afternoon I didn't feel any particular fear factor, and I was by myself.

The Medford location is in a small strip mall, and is a small counter-service type place with only a few tables. Zero atmosphere.

All that being said, I liked the sandwich a lot more at the Medford location. Maybe it was just how it worked out on those two random visits. My Camden Cheeseteak was a little tough, the Medford one was perfect.
